    MS - Kento Momota (JPN)
    WS - Sun Yu (CHN)
MD - Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi (INA)
WD - Ou Dongni/Yu Xiaohan (CHN)
XD - Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei (CHN)

The last Superseries tournament before Olympic qualification period ended on 1st May, all participants should go all out to grab 9,200 point and consolidate their position at Race to Rio ranking.

Men's singles category will offer no less than fierce competition with China top guns, Chen Long and Lin Dan occupy first and second seed, followed by Danish duo Jan O Jorgensen-Viktor Axelsen, Chinese Taipei leading man Chou Tien Chen and recent All England runner-up Tian Houwei. 2008 champion, Lee Chong Wei skipped this event and last year winner Kento Momota had withdrawn due to illegal gambling suspension. Second round of last year edition scored a bizarre fact happened in this category when all seeded players tumbled at same stage. The winner statistics of previous editions indicated many underdogs tasted the glory in SIS since Superseries inauguration, back to 2007. It's interesting to follow whether this trend will happen again this year.
R/32 highlights : Chou Tien Chen (TPE) v Angus Ng Ka Long (HKG), Son Wan Ho (KOR) v Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk (THA), Vincent Wong Wing Ki (HKG) v Hans Kristian Vittinghus (DEN)

A huge challenge for the unseeded Sun Yu to repeat last year successful as almost all first echelon shuttlers show up here, reigning world champion Carolina Marin, recent All England champion Nozomi Okuhara, newly-crowned back to back SS winner Ratchanok Intanon, two-time winner Wang Yihan, last year beaten finalist Tai Tzu Ying and Korean leading lady Sung Ji Hyun. The tall Chinese Sun Yu will start her campaign against local hopeful Liang Xiaoyu. Two Chinese notable WS are absent here, Li Xuerui and Wang Shixian while 2010 champion Saina Nehwal pulled out.
R/32 highlights : Wang Yihan (CHN) v Bae Yeon Ju (KOR), Porntip Buranaprasertsuk (THA) v Yui Hashimoto (JPN), P.V. Sindhu (IND) v Busanan Ongbumrungpan (THA), He Bingjiao (CHN) v Tai Tzu Ying (TPE)

It's not a good start in 2016 season for current best MD pairs, Lee YD/Yoo YS and Ahsan/Setiawan who failed to reach final in top level tournament lately. Barring any upsets, the Koreans world number one will take on defending champion Pratama/Suwardi in quarterfinal stage while second seed Indonesian may meet Endo/Hayakawa. The other regular contestants, Fu HF/Zhang N, Ko SH/Shin BC and just concluded MAS Premier winner, Kim GJ/Kim SR also taking part in this Superseries.
    R/32 highlights : Gideon/Sukamuljo (INA) v Lee SM/Tsai CH (TPE), Kamura/Sonoda (JPN) v Kim GJ/Kim SR (KOR), Chai B/Hong W (CHN) v Koo KK/Tan BH (MAS)

China WD stamp authority and unstoppable since 2007 edition, only once non Chinese pair won the title, 2010 edition when home combination Yao Lei/Shinta Mulia Sari topped podium. The reigning world and olympic Champion Tian Q/Zhao YL will be China best hope to continue their supremacy here. Major threat will coming from the Japanese squad considering their stunning performance recently with two strong contenders in this category, Matsutomo/Takahashi and Maheswari/Polii.
    R/32 highlights : Kititharakul/Prajongjai (THA) v Jung KE/Shin SC (KOR)

On the drawing list, China and Indonesia pairs are the favorites to win XD title. Three-time winner Ahmad/Natsir, current All England winner Jordan/Susanto and two Chinese pairs, Liu C/Bao YX also Xu C/Ma J as well who still trying to find their best form. Home hopeful Chrisnanta/Vanessa Neo who shocked Jordan/Susanto last week in Shah Alam will up against Netherlands combination, Arends/Piek at second round. Some intriguing ties at opening round that may see some unexpected outcome tomorrow.
    R/32 highlights : Ahmad/Natsir (INA) v Fukuman/Sonoda (JPN), Dechapol/Taerattanachai (THA) v Lee YD/Lee SH (KOR), Mateusiak/Zieba (POL) v Subaktiar/Widjaja (INA), Wang YL/Chen QC (CHN) v Lee CH/Chau HW (HKG)

Latest withdrawal according to ts com updated : Xue Song (CHN), Kento Momota (JPN), Parupalli Kashyap (IND), Saina Nehwal (IND), Liu XL/Qiu ZH (CHN), Conrad/Kolding (DEN), Ellis/Langridge (ENG), Chen HL/Wang CL (TPE), Muskens/Piek (NED), Tang YT/Yu Y (CHN)

Seems WS category is the most interesting. RI said she's ready to be 1st WS W.Ranking. That is she has to take the title here. Will WYH , CM , and the best one at bottom half let her go through ?

Yes, it's confirmed she won't come to Singapore and will be resting in Malaysia.

Quite disappointed coz I am look forward for her round 1 showdown against Okuhara.

Singapore Indoor Stadium is not a favorite hunting ground for LCW, he don't even register for this year tournament.

He only won once back in year 2008. ;)

I hope local favourite Liang Xiaoyu makes it to the quarter finals. Her moment of glory came in the semi finals of the Thai Open last year when she defeated Ratchanok . But its an uphill climb as she meets Sun Yu last year's gold medallist in the Singapore Open.

I hope Victor Axelson performs well. He has been snapping at the heels of the other badminton greats. But a super series title has sadly eluded him. Make it this time!

    Thanks CLELY. :)

As the last ranking points qualifying tournament for Rio, this OUE Singapore Open has attracted much more interest than last year.
But last minute withdrawals have always been a disappointment, particularly from the top players like the unfortunate Momota. SN used to be a favourite here and her absence will be sorely felt.

However, as indicated by some, Singapore has not been a favourite hunting ground. Recent history showed that Boonsak could be an exception as he has won twice.

But LCW won only once though Singapore is Malaysia's closest neighbour and I hope LD's luck will change for the better for at least once. His main stumbling block must be his compatriot, WR1 Chen Long, provided the latter can manage the draft in SIS and not get into the habit of hitting long as he did against LCW during the just-concluded Malaysia Open.

Our local players, unfortunately, will not be a threat. :( Our best bet is in our XD of Danny and Vanessa, but I guess we have to be happy if they can reach the QF. For that matter, if any of our players or pairs can appear in the QF, we should celebrate! Sad state of affairs in Singapore badminton and it will take a long time to recover.

To all visitors, have a happy outing! :D

LCW can't reveal more of his secret weapons, especially to CL and LD. :p

You may be able to catch VA in person if he decided to come up to the gallery to interact with his fans. Last year he did that and made them happy by speaking a smattering of Mandarin.

SG Open is the last Superseries event to offer Olympic qualification points but not the "last ranking points" for Rio Olympic qualifying.

After SG Open, we will have China GPG, Continental Championship (Asia, European, Oceania & Pan-AM), International Challenge & International Series tournaments and these tournaments points will count towards the respective World Ranking Lists during the Rio qualification period. FYI, the qualifying period ended 1st May 2016 and BWF will based on the World Ranking Lists of 5 May 2016 to allocate the athletes Quota Places in Men’s and Women’s Singles, and Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles.

    You're welcome :)
Chen L v Lin D in final? I guess both of these players will save their best for Rio ;)

Yup, he had defeated both China stars previously, Lin Dan (Denmark Premier) & Chen Long (Dubai Finals). No Lee CW and Momota as his biggest stumbling block this time, will he snatch maiden SS title here?
