I was wondering if my technique for a backhand smash is correct.

I take a step towards the backcourt with my racket leg bent, with my back facing the net. Then, with my elbow usually at, or above my shoulder (depends where I'm hitting it from), I bring my elbow towards the backcourt, forcing my wrist towards the net in an arc (abbout 22 degrees from the horizontal), and then snap my wrist right before I hit the shuttle. All the while an attempt is made to snap forward my racket leg, pushing my self towards the net.

This technique works fairly well I think, I can usually hit a good speed backhand smash with a fairly good angle to it. However, I was wondering if this was the best way to do it, as sometimes it feels as though I am over-tourqueing my elbow when doing the whipping action

    Thanks

ummmm.......... if the shuttle is high enough for you to do a backhand smash, maybe you should do a round-the-head smash. more accurate and more power :)

haha my backhand smash hardly qualifies as a smash. I just twist my racket arm so racket is pointing downward, and twist arround over the top toward the net moving my arm as i go. I used to like the backhand smash, but i barely find the need for it anymore, i just go arround the head with some lean like red dragon said.

It would be best if you just posted a video of you doing the smash.

Backhand smashes are more immediate if you get them right, and they include the element of surprise - two things that result in your opponent having less time to react.

Well its kind of a mix

I realised a while ago that if you do the full backhand grip you're not able to get the full wrist motion, or the forearm whip so what i do is, I place my thumb around the bevel of the handle
