Fourty entrants of badminton finest are ready to rock luxurious The Hamdan Sports Complex , the first time SS Finals is held at glitzy and metropolis Middle East city, Dubai. Overall, it’s impressive star-studded cast for all five categories, minus two badminton iconic names, Lin Dan and defending champion Lee Chong Wei who must skip this glam looks season ending tournament of BWF SS circuit for different reason. The tournament will apply round-robin format and started from group stage matches and only top-two of each group who can advance to final four that fresh drawing will be conducted after last match of group stage is finished.

In men’s single department, China sole representative World Champion Chen Long has tough path to top podium on Sunday finale, some hot contenders who potentially deny China #1 to retain his 2012 title are the much improved Son Wan Ho, Danish #1 Jan Ø Jorgensen and Indian rising star Srikanth Kidambi. MS discipline is more competitive recently with fresh faces emerged as SS winner.
For WS, Saina Nehwal, last year’s runner-up Tai TY and Korean duo Sung JH & Bae YJ plus sensational Japanese prodigy Akane Yamaguchi will shake China prowess that represented by Wang Shixian and Wang Yihan who replaced the Olympic Champion Li Xuerui due to injury. We’ll see whether former champion, Shixian and Yihan will regain their 2010 and 2011 title respectively or new name will crown the trophy.

Doubles disciplines, Lee YD/Yoo YS who grabbed four SS titles along with defending champion Ahsan/Setiawan will be the pair to beat. Stiff competition normally happens in MD discipline, the fast and furious attacking display are expected from all eight combos for badminton enthusiasts. China is the frontrunner for WD and XD, as their high profile pairs will show off their supreme skill against rest of the world. World Champion and Olympic Champion Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei who performed excellent badminton lately is hot favourite for this category. Top-seed Matsutomo/Takahashi, recent Asian Games Gold Medalist Maheswari/Polii and European best pair Pedersen/Juhl may defy the Olympic Champion ambition here. XD title can’t go away from one of top-four, Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei who present strong sign last month to nail back to back SS title in Fuzhou and Hong Kong, reigning All England Champion Ahmad/Natsir and defending champion Fischer/Pedersen. Too bad the #1 seed Xu Chen/Ma Jin withdrew in last minute and was replaced by their younger compatriot, Liu Cheng/Bao Yixin (#8 SS ranking).

Some noteworthy ties tomorrow :

- Ratchanok Intanon (THA) v Tai Tzu Ying (TPE), last meeting on Axiata Cup semifinal when Intanon defeated Tai TY in rubber games, big possible the match also will be finished by extra set once again
- Chen Long (CHN) v Kenichi Tago (JPN), first meeting after Tago's sensational victory over Chen L at Thomas Cup semifinal last May. Will the World Champion take revenge?
- Wang Shixian (CHN) v Saina Nehwal (IND), as usual a long and marathon match and hard to predict who will prevail this time
- K.Srikanth (IND) v Kento Momota (JPN), looks like the on fire Srikanth will level their head to head
- Wang Yihan (CHN) v Akane Yamaguchi (JPN), Wang YH will try her experience against Japanese teen who often troubling top players

Most of the SSF participants are also ranked highly above WR8 in the latest BWF World Rankings.

But there are some exceptions. Some of them are ranked below WR8 and others ranked higher who did not qualify or opted out for various reasons like injury, suspension, limited by a max of 2 representatives/teams, etc, shown as follows:

MS
OUT - LCW (1) (MAS), LD (7) (CHN)

IN - Hans-Kristian Vittinghus (12) (DEN), Ken Momota (15)(JPN),

WS
OUT - LXR (1) (CNH), Carolina Marin (8) (SPA)

IN - Bae Yeon Ju (9) (KOR), Akane Yamaguchi (17) (JPN)

What a waste that CM, as the current World and European Champion, was omitted.
She defeated LXR to become WC. Hopefully her predecessor, RI (7) (THA), who also beat LXR, will be able to shine in the absence of LXR, who was reported to be injured.

MD
Bulls-eye. All teams ranked WR1 to WR8 qualified.

KOR top scores with 2 teams - LYD/YYS (1) and KSH/SBC (6).

WD
OUT - Bao Yixin/Tang Jinhua (6) (CHN), Wang Xiaoli/Yu Yang (7) (CHN)
(Max 2 teams from each country)

IN - Nitya Krishinda Maheswari/Greysia Polli (9) (INA),
Jung Kyung Eun/Kim Ha Na(10) (KOR)

XD
OUT - Xu Chen/Ma Jin (2)(CHN), Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong (7) (CHN)

IN - Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthongkam (9)(THA),
Michael Fuchs/Birgit Michels (11) (GER)

AY is the lowest ranked participant and as the underdog, she is fearless (and youngest) and may well spring a surprise.
