I have a horrible announcement to make...

    Hello badminton friends,

    I apologize for the subject title...

    I have an announcement to make, and well it's unfortunately a rather negative one for me anyhow.

    I'm officially announcing my retirement from playing badminton, and possibly most sports that require the use of my right arm.

    Just over 2 months ago, I received a rather serious injury to my right forearm muscles ( a tear ), and it has yet to show any improvement in healing.
    I've been going through physio now for the past little while, with little to no improvement, and on the advice of my doctor, I am forced to retire from the sport for the time being, possibly indefinitely. (Unless I can figure out how to train my left hand to play ;) )

    But as it remains, it looks like I'm sidelined indefinitely now... as yesterday my friends daughter picked up a tennis racquet, and whacked my arm a few times, literally dropping me to my knees due to the shooting pain going through me... I really didn't think it could hurt like that, but I remember one of my friends who plays football (american style), who tore his bicep muscle, and can no longer play quarter back.
    Anyhow...
    I bid the rest of you fellow badminton players the best, and of course I'll still be around to post, and cheer on the pros, but at the moment it looks doubtful I'll be able to play again.
    Unless I train my left arm... :p but looking at my schedule of events and tasks I need to complete in the next little while, it looks doubtful for me.
    Anywho, I just thought I would share my woe with you guys :( I know totally how Badrad feels.

    PS: I absolutely love this sport, and it totally sucks to hear that I wont be able to play like I used to. Sometimes life just sends you a few curveballs... I guess it's how you dodge them, and recover from them, that shows the measure of your strength, and courage.

    if you have the determination and presistent then nothing can stop you from playing, trainning your left arm shouldn't be too hard, just apply your every day life activities with your left hand(ex. washing your face, eating, writing, ect) and plus you already got the fundamentals of badminton from playing so its not like starting it over completely new, anyways I hope your right arm do recover so you can play again.

    Have you tried seeking the advice of a sports medicine specialist? ( like the one at UBC)

    Jeez,

    Jeez, Kelvin...that's a downer. Try the left arm/hand. Panhandle did that when he was injured (read his bio in the Intro forum) and now he can play almost equally well with his left. Have you check with a specialist on the actual condition of your right arm? I would and then take my time in recovering. If hockey players can recover from their injuries, there's no reason why you wouldn't able to.

    I recently suffered a lower back injury and I know the feeling of not being able to do the things that you take for granted.

    I agree with SmashingBird there, you need not let it go. Rehabilitation will take time and may not do too much of a good but you can switch your playing style - many people I know who have lost that physical edge end up playing a wiser and more controlled game than they used to.

    Until you can't move your arms or walk without support, you can still play, although so much less in the way you would have loved to do so.

    But then again, perhaps I can understand your thoughts a bit - "If I can't perform my best, might as well not play; it takes the joy away". Yes, and I agree.

    Whatever it is, do remain in BF even when you no longer play it.

    Have you tried different hospital/doctors ? Perhaps others will have different treatments to help you to heal?

    If you're that much of a fanatic, it doesn't take much to get a second (or third or fourth or fifth and so on) opinion from different medical specialists...I think injury is huge misfortune, however it should never 'disable' anyone.

    I personally gave up and made a similar speech when serious injury struck a few years back, however some very good friends gave me a 'pep' talk. Gained other professional opitions and although not perfect or fully recovered, things have been well since and I am still playing the sport I love.

    Good luck with recovery, try every possibilities...

    I forgot to mention, when "western medicine & treatments" are not available (or not helpful), you might want to try some alternatives, such as "eastern" treatments, such as acupuncture & moxibustion therapy, herbs......etc.

    Chinese way of healing was used for more than 4000 (or 5000? :rolleyes: ) years, and it should mean something if it's used for that long of time. It is proven that some of them are working (like miracle!), so you might want to try it....

    It is sad to hear when someone has an injury that causes major lifestyle change. But as you can see from your own words (in bold) that shows there is still hope for you to enjoy this sport of Badminton.

    It does time, like any other injury, to re-train your body to compensate or to adjust.

    I have confidence in you that, you can attain a level of play with your other hand which will give you great satisfaction to be on the court again.

    sorry to hear that kelvin, but don't give up so easily. Still ways that you could actually play again,

    1) train your left hand, since you already had the idea, why not take a chance? Might be worth it. Hate to see people give up the thing they love to do most.

    2) Like Bluejeff said, why not give eastern medicine a try? all this while, whenever i had sprains or injuries, i will go for the eastern rather than the western medicine. no offence to any western medicine practioner here. :D

    But as of now, try to take as much rest possible, and don't do things that might further injure the already injuried body part.

    Hello fellow badminton fans,

    I want to thank you for your support and encouraging words.
    It really does mean a lot, and gives me hope.

    But, I neglected to mention other injuries I suffered non-sports related that are also hinderances.

    The accident happened while I was working out, i was working on shoulders, when a friend I had not seen in a long time came up behind me, and tapped me on the shoulder during my lift... I got startled, and nearly dropped an 80lb dumbell from my right arm... I was told if I had dropped it, I would not be injured... but instead, I tried to hang on, and twisted, and tore my forearm muscle in the process.
    The x-rays on my right arm suggest, that when I dropped the weight so suddenly, my bone not only shifted out of place, but also bent, rather than broke. If it was a break, it would be simple, and I would need a cast.
    But because of the bone not breaking it's been causing me some extreme pain, and I asked, but didn't receive a clear answer, if there's any way to really "bend bones" back into shape, infact now that I think about it, that may be more painful!! :eek:

    The other injury was sustained when a dump truck wasn't slowing down as I was walking off a street car (trolley), in Toronto, as I saw it coming out of the corner of my eye, I quickly turned & pushed the people behind me back up onto the car, in the process of turning I tore some cartilage in my right knee area, and now the bone shifts under extreme movement, I wear a knee brace to help me, but it just doesn't perform the way it used to...
    I guess after all these years of playing so many types of sports, and different types of strenuous physical activity (american football, rugby, volleyball, basketball, badminton, ice hockey etc etc) that all of it is finally catching up to me for the time being.

    You guys are right though, if I have determination to get better, I can get past these obstacles... only problem is I have 2 things against me... my own patience, is rather short for myself and time.

    I'll be rather busy working/studying, it does not look like I'll have as much time as I'd like to heal the way I want, or need to.
    I've booked an appointment with a sports doctor to see if there's anything else that can be done... I mean wearing a cast/brace, has got to be easier than feeling my bones grind.

    Anywho, thank you guys once again for the encouraging words, I really do appreciate it. Maybe one day I can look forward to playing on the courts again, for the time being, I guess I just need to rest my body.

    Kelvin,

    Do not give up on anything you love to do because of injuries. Just give yourself some time to recover and gradually getting your muscle back to shape through physical therapy. Muscles can rebuild itself, just do not give up.

    hang in there Kelvin, it may take more time, but you will get back to it. maybe not this year, but just keep thinking positive.

    i had a similar weight training accident last Xmas. while doing bench presses, and it was a silly - just careless - error. after completing my reps, i was setting the weight back onto the overhead rests, i didn't notice that it was not fully over the ledge, so as i was releasing the barbell, the right side slipped, and came down and pinned my right shoulder.

    it sucks, as it is now mid-year and i just haven't been able to fully get back into playing. it had healed twice, but both times i went and trashed it again in tournaments.

    so lately, even though it feels okay, i just haven't been too focused in playing anymore - i have been noticeable absent from most centers. the times i have been playing, it's without any energy as i have been too reluctant to use full strength just not to re-injure.

    so buddy - it's alternate sport time - i think motoring in your little speed buggies won't strain your right arm too much?

    I'm reminded of a guy who used bad form during bench pressess, and ended up tearing his pec muscle very seriously. He also broke his arm in an unrelated accident. He gave it a year and is now benching almost as much as he did before.

    While you may suffered a serious injury, it is by no means fatal to your game. You should see a doctor who specializes in sports injuries if you are serious about the game.

    well ur only 25 man...acc to ur profile...i wish u get healed asap...man u will u know...coz ur not an old man...juss make a determination...its literally that important..juss keep seeing physio...excercise...u'll get that back man..

    when I started to play actively again last year, i had some persistent pains in my shoulder joints. It seems like a bit "out of place" near the shoulder and the arm. there was also a clicking sound when I swing my arm. :D

    but it was gone! Now I focus on my knee pain, i am taking glucosamine tablets and rubs, and buy comfy shoes. I am happy with the progress. My cholesterol levels are now 188 which is an achievement since year 2002. So keep on healing, I wish you speedy recovery and come back to badminton.

    hey Kelvin, sorry to hear that. I also tore some muscle in my right arm about 4 months ago. At first I kept playing with it cuase the pain was bearable at first, but later it got worse and worse and finally I had trouble lifting my small pom (8 lb dog) with my arm. I totally know what you mean by sharp pain in the muscle. Well that finally rang a bell and I stopped for about 3 weeks and I played carefully since. it seems like my arm is much better now but still hurts after an awkward shot. Maybe I should have rested longer than 3 weeks but this game is too addicting for me to sit out even that long.

    Anyways, use lots of heat pad when you get a chance since increased blood flow to the injured area also speeds up healing. Good luck and start using your left arm as well. btw, my favorite player Yang Yang is left handed. Maybe you can watch his video and learn the swing and footwork. good luck.

    Sorry to hear bout your injury Kelvin. How long have you been injured and how long have you been going thru the treatments? I really hope and i'm sure all the BCfers wish one day that you can play back again. Since you are staying in Canada.. i can recomend my fren who is a good doctor. I'm sure he can help you in your condition. Which part of Canada do you stay.. if can you may PM me to give me full details of your condition and what you have been thru.

    I have been reading and considering what a lot of you have said regarding alternative medical treatment...
    The problem right now is my forearm is swollen around the torn muscle, and I've been going to physio, with great anguish... I realize sports injuries no matter what injury and what sport are like a double edged sword, causing both physical, and mental stress on people.

    The tear was apparently rather serious, and I keep replaying the intial cause of the injury over and over in my head, saying that I should have done things differently, but what's done is done.
    I mean it's been about 2 months, and I kept trying to play for the two months and do regular activities, such as frisbee, volleyball, basketball, and (american football), and baseball with my arm, and probably caused more harm than anything through this time period... so really I am reaping what I have been sewing :(

    Do you guys know of the Chinese/Asian rubbing alcohol treatment that eastern medical practitioners recommend?
    Well I've been on that for the last little while... *fans nose area with left hand...* it stinks! LOL

    I've also been doing the hot & cold treatments, and like I mentioned doing different types of exercise in physio now, but, because the muscle is torn, the "experts" were telling me that I really should not be doing anything on the arm until I show signs of improvement with the muscle area, before continuing.... can anyone say malpractice??????
    Again... I'm just a little frustrated, but trying to take things in stride.

    I'm still studying my books right now preparing for my MCAT so this gives me more time to focus now :p

    Also your suggestions about watching videos, is dually noted!!
    I like that suggestion. hehehe.

    Seriously it is awesome to see, and read this from many folks I do not know and have not met, and it is good for the heart to know people out there have gone through similar situations and are able to suggest alternatives and other things I can do.

    PS: I was thinking about acupuncture, but until the forearm muscle actually heals... I dont know if having my muscle contract, would be such a good idea right now, as it is tough enough lifting, or moving my arm aside to perform other tasks LOL I can picture myself screaming aloud in the doctor's office while receiving acupuncture and scaring off the first timers LOL
