    2016 WINNERS : https://bwf.tournamentsoftware.com/...5E58BA-9DC6-4161-B20A-16FD377EDD0D&d=20160124

    MS - Lee Chong Wei (MAS)
    WS - P.V. Sindhu (IND)
    MD - Gideon Marcus Fernaldi/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo (INA)
    WD - Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi (JPN)
    XD - Zheng Siwei/Li Yinhui (CHN)

    No one of last year winners will defend their MAS GP Gold title here, overall it's pretty weak line-up this time than 2016 edition when some elite players showed up to collect Olympic qualification point. China and its neighbours, Japan first layered team also almost of all Korea players as well skip this tournament except the veteran Lee Hyun Il.

    In men's singles category, recent HKG Superseries winner and top seed Ng Ka Long will be pre tournament favourite, he's slated to meet Indonesian hopeful Ihsan Maulana Mustofa at last sixteen, another HKG-INA clash at this stage will pit Wei Nan against promising star Jonatan Christie. Host Malaysia will banking on their number two MS, Iskandar Zulkarnain who seized attention last year, only lost to Lee Chong Wei in final. Barring any upsets, Zulkarnain will face former champion Lee Hyun Il at third round. Two seeded players withdrew before tournament started, second seed Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk and 4th seed Wong Wing Ki.

    Women's singles department will see former world number one Saina Nehwal as strong contender, her world ranking has plummeted into number 10 at the moment due to long absence due to post Rio Olympics knee surgery. Nehwal is still in process to regain her best and has chance to bag GP Gold title here. At lower half of draw, home prodigy Goh Jin Wei and Hong Kong resurgent shuttler Cheung Ngan Yi who produced impressive feat in second-half Superseries tour last season are scripted to face off at quarterfinal.

    An interesting men's doubles tie at opening round, newly-crowned China IC winner Ahsan/Saputro will take on TPE, Lee JH/Lee Y. The world #13 scored back to back final in GP Gold event late last year in Macau and Korea. Rio silver medalists Goh/Tan pulled out, leaving three seeded pairs in upper-half of draw to chase final spot. Lack of participants in women's doubles department, local number one pair have been splitted, Vivian Hoo is paired up with Chow Mei Kuan while Woon Khe Wei gets youngster Goh Yea Ching.

    Three mixed doubles combination have withdrawn, top-seed Chan PS/Goh LY, Hong Kong's Lee CH/Chau HW and Indians Chopra/Reddy. Rio Olympic Gold medalist Tontowi Ahmad will make his debut with Gloria Widjaja as Liliyana Natsir is still recuperating her knee injury. Fierce competition is expected from bottom-half draw which involves second seed Tan KM/Lai PJ, Hong Kong new hotshots Tang Cm/Tse YS and 4th seed Indonesians Alexander/Oktavianti.

    Anthony Ginting came from behind to take revenge over Thai player Khosit Phetpradab who knocked him at Bitburger Open opening round end of last year, 26-28 / 21-10 / 21-12. Meanwhile one of INA promising hopeful Firman A. Kholik continues his flopped performance, lost straight sets to HKG youngster Lee Cheuk Yiu.

    Maybe it's time for him to retire from international competition ;)

    ROUND OF 16 (11.00am) => https://www.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/matches.aspx?id=54E1F2CE-E50F-4FF4-A4F4-576D92D5380C

    Current world number nine, Ng Ka Long will face Indonesian hurdles in his path to semifinal, Ihsan Maulana Mustofa and most likely Jonatan Christie tomorrow. One more INA youngster Anthony Ginting has complicated task, home independent player Chong Wei Feng. Former champion Lee Hyun Il is expected to check into last eight, other seeded player on bottom half of draw Tommy Sugiarto will be challenged by Hong Kong rookie, 2014 AJC bronze medalist, Lee Cheuk Yiu.

    Top contender Saina Nehwal eliminated Thai qualifier comfortably while second seed Cheung Ngan Yi was pushed to work extra hard before prevailed over Indonesia teen Gregoria Mariska. Local young star Goh Jin Wei had trouble to pass Indian opponent Kudaravalli, next former WJC Goh will take on TPE promising talent, Lee Chia Hsin. Nehwal will find tricky test in this competition, Hanna Ramadhini who pushed her into the limit in their last meeting, Macau Open first round late last year.

    Two MD upsets were created by recent China IC winner Ahsan/Saputro who downed highest seed here, Lee JH/Lee Y in rubber games also home hopefuls Goh SF/Izzuddin stunned 7th seed HKG combination Or CC/Tang CM.
