Missing the shuttle - Why and How to overcome.

    Hi all,

    This happened to me a number of times. Whenever I try to block the shuttle, be it in front or at my sides, it keeps going pass me. It is as if I have a hole in my racket. I am pretty sure it is not because of timing as I "arrive at the location" earlier than the shuttle. But I just keep missing it. The same do not happen if I swing or hit the shuttle.

    What is the cause of this and how could I overcome it?

    You are suppose to swing it. Shuttles don't come to you.

    Try practicing hitting against the wall and you will get better with your reflexes and placing. Try to achieve 50 times non stop. You will struggle to hit 10 times at first.

    Taking your eye off the shuttle and looking at where your going to hit it maybe the problem.

    craigandy may have a point as I tend to expect where the shuttle should arrive at. However I'll try the hit-the-wall practice too. Thanks!

    unless you shut your eyes the shuttle is actually still in your vision until it passes behind you. you just need to train to spot it.
    You shouldn't look at the shuttle directly and you should also not look at the shuttle at all and expect it to go where you think.
    you need to train your peripheral vision (seeing things off center). you should have the shuttle in view but also keep an eye on your opponent.
    try bouncing the shuttle up and down on your racket. start by looking at it in front of you. then as you can do this repeatedly, start doing it more and more to the side of your body but still looking forwards. you should still be able to see it in your peripheral vision.

    Try this type of defence. See if you can last for 5 minutes. Your arm should sore. ;)

    You defence will be like a wall after doing it regularly. ;)

    This is another angle. From a defensive point of view, your legs must be nimble. ;)

    This old guy just started, a bit stiff on the legs. But good effort. ;)

    Are you talking about defensive play? You mean that the opponents hit a smash and you miss the shuttle? Or is it some other situation?

    Yes. Mostly defending against smashes.

    I'm aware that it is facing straight.

    This sounds like such a beginner and unprofessional thing to say, especially seeing as i'm not a pro either, but in my experience, it turns out that my judgement and/or reach means the the shuttle goes just beyond my racquet
