There were some people speculating about how the ranking will stand after the Malaysian Open. I calculated for the top 8 players (the 9th-ranked player is a few thousand points away, and those outside the top 8 did not do particularly well anyway except for Chen Jin). This position will probably stay until the World Champs. There are several A and B grade tournaments, but I can't see any top players taking part.

    1. LD 37263.16 + 3570 (MO 2nd) - 1500 (drop out) = 39333.16
    2. KJ 32608.40 + 1680 (MO R16) - 1050 = 33238.4
    3. PGC 29923.52 + 2940 (MO SF) - 1680 = 31183.52
    4. BCL 26910.89 + 2940 (MO SF) = 29850.89 (9 events before, 10 after MO)
    5. LCW 25575.32 + 4200 (MO 1st) - 540 = 29235.32
    6. TH 26743.86 + 2310 (MO QF) = 29053.86 (7 events including MO)
    7. CH 26250 + 2310 (MO QF) = 28560 (9 events including MO)
    8. MHH 26484.2 + 2310 (MO QF) - 1680 = 27114.2

MHH is Hafiz in case you are wondering. You know the rest.
9th-placed Ng Wei can't overhaul Hafiz even if he won the MO.

I should think that nobody in 1-4 bracket wants to meet Taufik in the QF, and nobody in the 5-8 bracket wants to meet Lin Dan. But in general, I think it gets really tough in the QF no matter how the draw pans out.

I could have made some mistakes although I was careful in my calculations. If you want to see the official rankings wait till Thursday.

Also, it looks like Zhang Ning will regain her world #1 status (deservedly, I may add) this week.

Zhu Lin who I think can play very well (after I saw her for the first time in the MO final), will catapult from her current 60s position to the top 40.

thank you for the info - there is the possibility that lin peter and taufik or LCWend up in the top half of the draw -the bottom half is the place to be:)

Just a thought....in case Peter takes part in 2 'A' grade tournaments and wins them he might jump to 2nd..meaning he avoids Lin Dan atleast until the final and Kenneth moves to 3rd.[considering yout table is correct]

i doubt Peter will do this however, it will come in his way in his preparation for the WC.

Firstly, you are right that it will disrupt his preparation. Even if it doesn't, no self-respecting top player would play in an 'A' tournament, and take away another player's chance.

Secondly, even if the won 10 'A' tournaments, his ranking would still have remained. Winning an 'A' tournament garners 1800 points. His 10th-best tournament (after MO) is already worth more than that.

The worst possible scenario will be Lin Dan, Peter, Taufik and Lee CW ending up in the same half. Add in Lee HI, Sony, Shon, perhaps Wong CH, and you get a nightmare of a half. But that's what competition is all about. Man, I can't wait.

    1st quarter, seed 1 & 8
    2nd quarter, seed 4 & 5
    3rd quarter, seed 3 & 6
    4th quarter, seed 2 & 7

is the draw format as above?

No, the top 2 seeds are guaranteed their place. 3 and 4 are drawn for two places, while 5-8 are drawn for four places. That is how it is for normal competitions. I think the WC will be like that as well.

    So, it could be:
    1st quarter, seed 1 (LD) & 5 (LCW)
    2nd quarter, seed 3 (PGC) & 6 (TH)
    3rd quarter, seed 4 & 8
    4th quarter, seed 2 & 7

there is a probably of.. 1/8? for that to happen? not high, but not entirely impossible.

if they do end up in the same half, then christmas comes early!

i am gonna watch from 3rd round onwards. not going to miss any of the good games. :)

Poor Peter...Always get stuck with playing his archenemies, Taufik Hidayat or Lin Dan in the quarter-final or semi-final stages. Although he hasn't had any luck against Taufik, his games against Taufik are always excellent, and against Lin Dan too. I think Peter enjoys playing against Taufik but does not favor Lin Dan as much.

I hope Peter will get some break and that he comes out on top. He has been working very hard since his return from injury but it has been tough for him due to the lack of physical strength as a result of his knee operation.

the ranking update after SO coincidentally is the end for points earned frm M'sia Open 2004. hence his increment is less thn 4800 due to deduction of his points from MO last year..

And he also participated in very few tournaments. Counting MO, only 7 events count towards his current ranking. Just one more, and he would almost certainly be in the top 4.

He can take part in one of the 'A' tournaments coming up. There is one in Australia and another in New Zealand, I think, so that's not too far away. But I don't think he will do that.
