The International Badminton Federation and UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, are pleased to announce the launch of their new global alliance.

The partnership between IBF and UNICEF was officially launched at the International Olympic Committee Headquarters in Lausanne yesterday (Tuesday) with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by IBF President Korn Thapparansi and UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy.

The Signing Ceremony was witnessed by IOC President Jacques Rogge and Adolf Ogi, UN Special Advisor on Sport for Development and Peace.

Recognising sport as an important medium for the development of children, the IBF-UNICEF collaboration will use joint efforts to promote child protection, healthy recreation and universal access to quality basic primary education for all children on a global basis.

“One of the key global languages is sport,†explained Ms Bellamy, “and the language of sport can bring people together. We are delighted to enter into this partnership – we want this to make a difference to peoples' lives.â€

“We consider this to be a great privilege for IBF to sign this agreement in the presence of Dr Rogge and Mr Ogi as witnesses,†said President Thapparansi.

“From January 2005 a joint programme will be tangibly launched – through this we hope to be able to contribute towards a healthier programme for the children of the world.â€

Part of this programme will see the dedication of one of IBF’s major events in 2005 to children, and IBF will work alongside UNICEF to develop a programme of activities in connection with the event.

IBF is also working closely with the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, to develop a programme of support.

UN Special Advisor on Sport for Development and Peace, Adolf Ogi, concluded: "I hope that this agreement will be a an example for other Federations and other UN agencies.

“We create a better world through the younger generation, and today we make a step towards that goal.â€
