I've heard this is "the mark of a good player". I tried it this morning -- I could get it to touch the net, but not "over" it. Simple thread -- can you do it?

I don't know how to create a poll, so reply with how close you are and any tips on how to get it magically over the net!

Do you agree that this is the same motion/throw that should be used for overhead strokes?

    yes.

that's one of the drills i have beginner students do. most of them are surprised how hard it is, and many are surprised that they can do it after a bit of practice.

I have girl's arms* and I'm sure I hit the far service line. Must have picked a good shuttle :)
Does it make a difference feather vs plastic?

*nowt wrong with that. Not being sexist (for once).

Are you allowed to rotate your torso? If not, I don't think I can.

You're supposed to throw it like you're hitting a shuttle. Yes, I can get it to go over! It's difficult!

Can't do it for now. Majority of my shuttles I throw don't go over.

I can get it over on occasion. Those are when I rotate my body properly and everything is fluid. I wish my shots were that fluid all the time. :)

This action shows the importance of the proximal to distal sequential transfer of kinetic energy, from the hips to torso to shoulder to elbow to wrist, and finally to fingers.

When most people can't do it, it's because they're lacking torso rotation, leading elbow, forearm pronation, relaxed arm, or finger release.

Muscle power is not a strict requirement, as even properly trained high school girls can do it. What's more important is the smooth and proper timing in the sequence of energy transfer. Hence, technique.

Hahahahaha! Where's the like button when you need it?!

Back to topic - yes, first time I ever tried... just same action as playing a shot.

I have tried this in the past, and as a coach, I also had this as a drill where I completed it. It's quite easy for me, I can make at least 90% over the net. However, it really kills my shoulders so I cannot attempt too many at once.

Unfortunately - I don't have a very good smash or whatever this drill helps me with.

Interesting. Will try it just to come back and answer the poll. It's all for badminton science and research.

yeah. from a coaching point of view, it really emphasize the body rotation and arm swing, and all those add together means a proper overhead shot posture. for some reason, people can throw something and make it look natural, but once we put a racket on their hand, everything goes down the drain.

and if it impresses your friend or even some high school girls playing basketball...

Please everyone do not over emphasis throwing the bird over the net from baseline, someone will get the shoulder dislocated or tear a group of muscle especially for those who do not in good physical shape. Throwing any object that light require practise. You can treat it as a fun drill. Being able to throwing a bird over the net does not necessary mean you are a good badminton player. I believe every baseball player can do that without ever touching a badminton racket.

Very true. Make sure you don't let your ego get the better of you, and force it the wrong way.

As I mentioned, it's not power, but throwing technique.

Perhaps having to prevent the racket from flying out of the hand messes people up.

But I just tell beginners to have a loose grip and only tighten into impact and that seems to help.

Also I tell them to imagine the racket head as an extension of their arm and to accelerate that near the end of their throwing action.

My technique is subpar. I tried it today and I could not. Threw about 20-30, closest was 1-2' away from the net.

I wonder if we should start a thread of "post videos of yourself throwing shuttles at the net". This warm weather should help, they seem to be flying well :)

Tried it today with a new shuttle. Was suprisingly easy. Succeeded on the first try.
