Shin splints... Is there a doctor in the house

    Anyone here have any idea what is the best way to treat shin splints? I have suffered a nasty one to my left leg after the bay area open on Saturday and am in agony at present!!!

    As in shin splints being a kind of small fracture to the shin bone, I used to get this when I ran mainly due to the fact I was towing a few extra pizzas around with me and would have been well over the natural stick like build for running.

    I always found if they are not serious the best form of medication is rest, if you need more medical advice I suggest you wait for Cheung to answer.

    On another note if running is not for you look at the anything besides running thread about five or so down below this in the main forum listings

    Rest , antiinflammatory gel, possibly corrective insoles for trainers.

    Does one specific activity cause it or any walking, running playing? You may need to see a specialist f the problem persists to be fitted for corrective insoles. (Not the sort you buy in shops but the kind made for the shape of your feet specially.)

    Most people I know who does cross country or badminton get these shin splints. They have had it checked, and say you cant really do anything but wait, also because there is no possible way to stretch that area ( right below the knee right?) I have also had them, it went away in like a week or two. I did play badminton while I had it, I just did slow drills and never jumped.

    shin splints were spreading like wildfire among my teammates for a little while... lol...


    personally, when it came to me, all i did was walk it off and it eventually went away...

    there is a way to stretch this area. you know how you stretch your calf by pointing your toe up and in front of you? well do the opposite. point your toe behind you and let the top of your shoes remain on the ground and stretch.

    I'm sure that doesn't make much sense. Is there anyone who can explain this better?

    I think perhaps a little bit of everything caused it, one jump too many, old age etc etc

    FAO Ruth, by far and away the most important result from the Bay Open last weekend was that I won the D mens singles. Not bad for a 43 yr old.. Watch out C section next time
