This coming October 21st, Datuk Lee Chong Wei will become 27 year old. We have to admit that currently there are NO ONE in Malaysia that is anywhere near to his talent and he is so dominant that he in his league of his own as far as local Badminton is concern. And also we have to admit that sooner or later, this fantastic guy from Penang will sooner or later will loose his shine as age creeps up..... maybe anywhere between 5 - 8 years from now.....maybe. So BAM need to buckle up quickly or otherwise there will be no one that can replace him later. Currently in Malaysia, these are the talent that has been groom to suceed Datuk Lee Chong Wei and this is my verdict.... 1. Chong Wei Feng - Age 21 - BWF rank 43, making him the highest rank player amoung the BAM backup squad player - Recent achievement: All England 2009 (Qualifying round, lost to Anup Sridhar, 11-21/18-21), German Open 2009 (3rd round lost to top seed and eventual champion, Bao Chun Lai 18-21/17-21), Korea Super Series 2009 (2nd round lost to Simon Sontoso 13-21/15-21), Malaysia Open 2009 (1st round lost to Yan Kit Chuan 17-21/12-21) 2. Mohd Arif Abd. Latif - Age 20 - BWF rank 65, making him the 2nd highest rank player amoung the BAM backup squad player - Recent achievement:German Open 2009 (Qualifying round, lost to Kestutis Navickas, 19-21/22-24). Korea Super Series (2nd round, lost to Andrea Kurniawan, 12-21/16-21), Malaysia Open 2009 (Qualifying round lost to Hsuan Yi Hseuh 17-21/9-21) 3. Tan Chun Seang - Age 20 - BAM backup squad player, BWF rank 75 - Recent Achievement: German Open 2009 (2nd round lost to Rajiv Ouseph, 21-18/17-21/15-21),Korea Super Series 2009 (1st round lost to Sho Sasaki 15-21/12-21),Malaysia Open 2009 (Qualifying round lost team mate, Kuan Beng Hong 15-21/16-21) 4. Liew Daren - Age 20 - BAM backup player, BWF rank 80 - Recent achievement: German Open 2009 (1st round lost to Anand Pawar, 17-21/19-21), Korea Super Series 2009 (Qualifying round lost to Wan Ho Shon 21-16/7-21/15-21), Malaysia Open 2009 (Quater-finals lost to 3rd seed Peter Gade, 12-21/14-21) Verdict: It seems that Chong Wei Feng is our best bet from the backup squad to replace Datuk Lee Chong Wei as he is the BWF highest rank backup player and especially after judging his good performance against Bao Chunlai at the German Open recently. But when.....we don't know. However BAM should act quickly to polish his performance as at his age, most player from China would already able to break within the top 20 bracket. Other Backup player seems to be inconsistent and BAM needs to polish their performance quickly also.
