KUALA LUMPUR: Youngsters Lim Kenn and Law Yew Thien are through to the main draw of the men’s singles event of the Malaysian Open badminton championships.

The duo, who are in the Project 2010-12 squad handled by Rashid Sidek, won all their matches in the qualifying tournament yesterday.

“It is good that two of our players have made it into the main draw. It will be tough for them to get past the first round but it will certainly be good experience for them,” said Rashid.

Lim Kenn will take on Indonesia’s Simon Santoso while Yew Thien will play against second seed Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark.

Nusa Mahsuri’s Salim Sameon also advanced and will play against South Korean Ahn Hyun-suk.

It was again a sad end for national women’s number one Wong Mew Choo.

She crashed out in the first round of the qualifying tournament.

It was the second time in a week that she failed to get past the first round of a qualifying tournament.

At the Singapore Open last week, Mew Choo, who will feature in the World Championships next month, was eliminated by Japanese Yoshimi Hataya. She was beaten again by the same player yesterday, going down 11-8, 4-11, 11-9.

Malaysia have two qualifiers in the men’s doubles draw – Wong Choong Hann-Chew Choon Eng and Ng Kean Kok-Hong Chieng Hoon. The women’s doubles also have two Malaysian qualifiers – Norsyahliza Baharom-Anita Raj Kaur and Julia Wong-Haw Chiou Hwee.
