I think this is a bit racist already... plus it doesn't belong in the general board.

Unless you're born in China , you are not Chinese.

    This is a FACT.

That is one definition. However, that definition would exclude a person like me who has a chinese name on birth certificate, no English name, both parents chinese, not born in China (very far away),.....

ABC, BBC, CBC, IBC, MBC..You are not chinese!!

zero, you better get a drink, sit down and slowly read that thread. It contains many interesting views and experiences. Might have to read it more than twice.

See if it can help you find out some of the issues that haunt us....

One things for sure. I'm definately a badminton lover!!

It's probably a good idea to ask Chenwei to first tell us how he intreprets the definition of Chinese before we can answer his question.

Yes, Jo, I did read about the ABC, BBC, MBC etc etc and I wasn't too interested about it although I am a Malaysian chinese just like you.

What I am concerned, however, is the fact that most Malaysian chinese seems to identify themselves more to China than Malaysia itself.

I once asked a question to my friends - "If Malaysia and China were to go to war, which would you fight for?"

The jokers would definitely root for China as Malaysia would simply be destroyed due to the disadvantage in firepower and army size.

But for those who are not, they don't know how to answer. And these are the people whom I am really worried about.

    Just a thought.

In reply to the question on does it matter to be identified as chinese, have you ever had this happen to you?
    Q: Where are you from?
    A: Malaysia
    Q: So you are Malay.....

    What is your reply?

Yes Cheung. I just laughed good-naturedly and said, "No, I am a chinese".

I said so because my ancestry is chinese, not because my ancestors were once emperors of China.

The only thing is that the person who asked the question did not know that there are more than 80 ethnic groups here in Malaysia.

Am I proud of China? No.
Why not? I am not a Chinese.

How about you Cheung? Now that HK is now a SAR (no pun intended), how are your views in this matter?

I'm sure a few of you will be labelling me as a 'traitor' after this.

    Smile different

    I view things rather differently..

Nationality is the country of one's birth (unless you change nationality)

Ethnicity is determined largely by one's genetic trait's

Culture is what you feel inside you and how you regard yourself.

I prefer to use ethnic origin as my baseline definition of chinese. The other two have too many aberrant examples.
Having HK pre '97, post '97....well, makes no difference
Just like when M'sia was controlled by the British. Malaysian (or Malayans) didn't call themselves British then...or did they?
