Speed of Smash
i often see the speed of the smash displayed during tournament... is that speed the speed as the shuttlecock leave the smashing racket? or maybe it the speed when the defending racket touches the shuttlecock? or maybe it's neither...
thanks...

I think the speed radar records the speed of the shuttle during its flight, after the smash.

agree, it is whatever the laser gun shown, logically it's the moment right after the smash which is the fastest.

yeah, thanks... i think there are three possible speeds here:
1. the initial speed, ie the speed when the shuttle immediately leave the smashing racket, which is the fastest...
2. the speed at which the shuttle touches the defending racket (or the ground)... which is the slowest
3. the average speed for the entire flight... that is the distance the shuttle had travelled divided by the time it took for that distance.... this average speed would be somewhere in between the initial speed and ending speed...
My guess is this: the ending speed is 20% to 50% slower than the initial speed...
any thoughts?

I guess it's speed of the shuttlecock when is passed the net.

No, it is the speed as the shuttle leaves the smashing racket. That is, its fastest point.
But different machines gives different results - they are not very consistent and gives only relative informations (during one match or one tournament).

I was watching Badminton World Magazine on Youtube (Episode 5)
when they started talking about recording how fast the smash is, using a Radar speed gun.
More is in the videolink and they start talking about it at 21:11-23:30
It is just information that some might find interesting.
