British rock legends The Who have been chosen to headline the closing ceremony of the London Olympics.

They will be the star attraction of a musical extravaganza, which will mark the handover of the Olympic torch from London to Rio de Janeiro.

The event will also coincide with The Who’s 50th anniversary.

The band’s surviving members—singer Roger Daltrey, 68, and guitarist Pete Townshend, 67— were asked to take part by Take That producer Kim Gavin, the man in charge of the ceremony.

“When you’ve been around as long as The Who it can seem like you’ve seen and done it all,” the Mirror quoted a source close to The Who, originally famed for smashing up their instruments on stage, as saying.

“But the opportunity to play the biggest show on earth was too good to turn down, and Roger and Pete are delighted to be involved,” the source added.

    London 2012 Olympics: badminton guide
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/olympics/7904639/London-2012-Olympics-badminton-guide.html

    Excerpt:

The game of badminton is played on a court 13.4 metres long and 6.1 metres wide, which is divided in a half by a net about two metres high.

The purpose of the game is to get the shuttlecock over the net, using a racket, and make it land in your opponent's half of the court or have them hit it into the net or out of bounds. Games are won by the first team to reach 21 points, with a margin of at least two points. A match is the best of three games.

At London 2012 players will compete first in a group stage, before progressing to the knock-out stage of the competition. They will play with a very specific sort of shuttlecock, weighing between 4.74 grams and 5.5g and containing 16 feathers, each plucked from the left wing of a goose. These shuttlecocks can travel at speeds in excess of 250mph.

I have the badminton 50 p coin, my Dad ordered it from Royal mint and it currently sits in the "collectors edition" plastic bag it came in on my desk. Far away from any other coins, wouldn't want to spend it by mistake.

Looks like I need to get the London taxi and the stamp next, although I haven't seen one Olympic stamp, let alone the badminton one. By the time the Olympics is over I might have a small shrine of badminton collectables.

    The BC Curse is contagious!!

    The BC Curse is contagious!!!:eek::eek::p:p:p:p:p

    Read on to know why.......

World Athletics Championships: the curse of the programme
    Report: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/sport/...ics-championships-the-curse-of-the-programme/

    Excerpts:

It has become a running joke in Daegu that to be honoured on the cover is bad luck.

So of course it was no surprise to the superstitious that Robles, from Cuba, lost his hurdles title, disqualified in the protest room because he had hit the arm of his neighbouring hurdler, China’s Liu Xiang.

Just when we thought the pole vault star Yelena Isinbayeva would beat the jinx, whoops out she goes, failing to clear 4.80m.

Thats four cover athletes from four failing to claim the gold medal that they were favoured for.

Will the Daegu hex continue tomorrow? Who will be on the magazine title page next? Or will more than a few athletes be running for cover?

    Also about 3D Olympics broadcasting...

Olympics to be broadcast in 3D for up to 10 hours a day

The London 2012 Olympic Games will be broadcast in 3D for up to ten hours a day in a UK and worldwide broadcast first.

    By Jacquelin Magnay, Olympics Editor
    7:00AM BST 02 Sep 2011

International Olympic Committee's global sponsor Panasonic is providing the technology for a separate broadcast team to work with the Olympic Broadcast Service for the groundbreaking 3D production.

OBS chief executive Manolo Romero said 14 broadcasters including the BBC will be involved. It is proposed that the 3D coverage will include the opening and closing ceremonies and 12 of the 26 Olympic sports.

"We believe this is the most significant step in broadcast technology," Romaro said.

"We will deliver more than 12 sports, and for some of them it will be the first time in 3D. We will distribute by satellite worldwide 10 hours a day of Olympic vision in 3D.
The Olympic Games has been at the forefront of broadcast technology...The Olympic Games is a developer of broadcast opportunities which then becomes the standard."

Stella McCartney. Know her? No? Try again... Dad's name is Paul. Know him? No? Try again... Beatles. Know them? :D:D:D
Don't know them? Never mind; you're not yet born, and therefore, legally speaking, you shouldn't be on this forum!:p

But Stella is a "stellar" person herself. A big-name fashion designer who now has a huge range of garments and accessories selling in haute couture. She is a brand.

Her connection with the OG2012? Obviously as a fashion designer. An English fashion designer. She's designed a whole range of clothing - casualwear, sportswear etc with Adidas, for the GB team in particular, and anyone who has the money to buy the stuff, in general! Check out this hoodie. For £123.00 Only.

London 2012 athletes to get super-fast fibre broadband
    02/09/2011
    By Max Clarke

    http://www.freshbusinessthinking.co...12+athletes+to+get+super-fast+fibre+broadband

BT (LSE: BT.A) are extending free, super-fast fibre optic broadband across London’s Olympic Village as part of their commitments as official communications partner for the games.

The agreement reached between BT, the London 2012 Organising Committee and the International Olympic Committee will see BT’s Infinity service- capable of quoted speeds of up to 100Mb/s- extended to all of the 19,000 athletes and officials in each of East London’s Olympic Village’s 2,800 apartments.

“We’re extremely proud that BT is the broadband services provider of London 2012,” said Chris Clark, Director of BT’s London 2012 programme. “Supporting the communications needs of athletes during the Games is a central part of our role. Through the free broadband service we are providing with LOCOG, the athletes will be able to keep in close contact with friends and family, without worrying about costs. Crucially, the fibre network we are deploying at both venues will be a lasting legacy, providing local residents and businesses with super-fast broadband speeds long after the Games have drawn to a close. It’s all part of BT’s goal to make London 2012 the most connected Games ever.”

Both fibre broadband networks will remain in place after the Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the infrastructure open to all UK communications providers on an open, wholesale basis. This will ensure that BT’s fibre infrastructure at these sites is re-used in the most sustainable way while allowing users to benefit from a range of broadband suppliers and low prices. Following the Games, any subsequent site owners can continue to offer super-fast broadband services via their chosen supplier to residents or businesses housed at the venues. In the case of the Olympic Village, the site will be transformed into a new neighbourhood for east London, with 2,818 new homes, including 1,379 affordable homes.
