    2011 Commonwealth Youth Games - Isle of Man

    Events are held from September 7th to 13th.

    Badminton shall be held under these rules:

    Men and Women:
    14 18 years of age (athletes born in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 & 1997)

    Max athletes per CGA:
    4 men & 4 women.

    Men:
    Singles & Doubles 2 men in the Singles, 2 pairs in the Doubles.

    Women:
    Singles & Doubles 2 women in the Singles, 2 pairs in the Doubles

    Mixed Doubles:
    2 pairs


    Venue:
    The venue for the Badminton events will be the National Sports Centre (NSC), based approximately 1.5 miles (2.4km) from the Games Village on Douglas Promenade and being the main sporting centre for the Games with Athletics, Swimming, Rugby 7s and Mens Gymnastics also taking place on the same site. This 20 million multipurpose facility is truly the sporting centre of the Island. In September, 1991 the Athletics Stadium was opened by Steve Ovett, the former British and Olympic Champion. In 1998 the Pools, main Sports Hall and Health & Fitness Suite were opened. The development was completed by the opening of an Indoor Bowls Hall, a secondary Sports Hall and six Squash Courts in late 2000.

    The NSC Main Sport Hall which will be used for the competition is 44 x 36 metres and is the size of ten badminton courts. For the Games Yonex court mats will be installed to provide four competition courts and there will be over 500 seats for spectators. Four practice courts will be available in the adjacent Secondary Sports Hall.


    Support:
    The Badminton World Federation has asked Badminton England to assist with our preparations and they are providing excellent support. Chris Miller, Event Operations Manager has been designated as our main contact and is a member of our organising team.


    Schedule and Results:
    Badminton events start today, Friday 09-Sep, and the Finals will be held on Sunday 11-Sep.

    Question 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games - Isle of Man: Who will win Gold medals?

    India are in the finals of 3 events: MS, WS and XD! No surprise, really...
    Malaysia are in the finals of ALL the 5 events! WOW! In fact, the WD finals are an all-MAS affair!

    KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- The mission of the national badminton squad to contribute a medal to the Malaysian contingent at the 4th Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man, United Kingdom is a step closer after all the players qualified for the quarterfinals scheduled for today.

    Men''s single top seed Zulfadli Zulkifli qualified for the quarterfinals after defeating Tholego Chamo of Botswana in straight sets of 21-9, 21-8 in the third round and will meet Pratu Joshi of India.

    Another national player, Soong Joo Ven will face second seed Sameer Verma of India after whitewashing Mohamed Shabin of the Maldives 21-1, 21-1.

    Zulfadli pairing with Joo Ven were victorious again when they upset second seeds Daniel Font-Oliverr Gwilt of Wales 21-9, 21-11 in the men''s double and will face the hosts pair of Ryan McCarthy-Tom Wolfenden in the quarterfinals.

    In the women''s singles, Sonia Cheah and Yang Li Lian also made it to the quarterfinals when they demolished Saili Rane of India 21-7, 21-10 and Sri Lanka''s Achini Rathnasari 10-21, 21-16, 24-22 respectively.

    You'd think some of our English BCers would be following this thread, too. After all, the British MD pair are in the finals...
