Singaporean Shuttlers through to Round of 16

by Low Lin Fhoong 09:01 AM Sep 17, 2011

SINGAPORE - On the hunt for redemption after a disappointing performance at last month's Vietnam Grand Prix Open, the Singapore women's doubles pair of Yao Lei and Shinta Mulia Sari are through to the Round of 16 at the Yonex Belgian International, following their first round victory over Georgina Bland and Helena Cable last night.

Competing at the US$15,000 (S$18,600) tournament in Mechelen city, the top seeded duo took just 18 minutes to overcome their Danish opponents 21-5, 21-4. They will next face Emilie Lefel and Teshana Vignes Waran of France for a spot in the top eight.

Team-mates Chen Jiayuan and Vanessa Neo will face Denmark's Line Damkjaer Kruse and Marie Roepke (second seed) after they were awarded a walkover.

Earlier, Yao Lei had paired up with Chayut Triyachart in the mixed doubles event to post a 21-13, 21-14 victory over Beck Raphael and Kira Kattenbeck of Germany.

Also advancing were the mixed doubles pair of Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Vanessa Neo and the men's duo of Danny and Triyachart.

Over in the men's singles, Ashton Chen was still on court against third-seeded Dutch player Eric Pang in the Round of 16 at press time after defeating Flemming Quach (Denmark) 2-0 yesterday. LOW LIN FHOONG

The following Singaporean Players reached today's QF:

    XD Chayut/Yao Lei (3)
    WD Chen/Vanessa
    MD Danny/Chayut
    WD Shinta/Yao Lei (1)

Well the QF matches have begun and Chayut/Yao Lei have taken the first game 24-22 against their DEN rivals Mikkel Delbo Larsen/Lena Grebak.

However DEN is now leading 5-3 in G2.

I'm afraid your eyes have played tricks on you.

The SIN pair of Chen/Vanessa bt JC/ LS 21-9, 25-27, 21-11. Truly a surprise win for the SIN scratch pair.

However, I'm not sure why Danny/Chayut gave a walkover to their opponents.
Maybe Chayut needs a good rest for his SF XD match with Yao Lei against Kim/Line of DEN.

Yao Lei has another SF match in WD with Shinta as the topseed and should not overstretch herself in the XD. Therefore it is expected that Chayut will have to put in greater effort.

It is good to see TCS advancing into the SF after beating Dmytro Zavadsky 21-14, 22-20.

He will be meeting INA's Andre Tedjono next.

Howver it was a greater surprise when this pair beat the No. 2 seed of Line Damkjaer Kruse/Marie Roepke (DEN) 22-20, 21-18 yesterday. Just hope their luck will continue in the SF.

The SF has started about half an hour ago it seems.

Chayut/Yao Lei have just beaten the Danish XD pair of Kim Astrup Sorensen/Line Kjaersfeldt 21-19, 21-9 in 26 min.
