    Situation:

I have a drop rod stringing machine, using digital scales I measure the pulling of the string to 24lbs.

I Clamp my racket in place tighten the top and bottom points, then tighten the 4 other side points.

I have strung different rackets using a varying range of string.

    Questions:

Why do some rackets feel tighter than others?

How tight should i clamp the racket in?

The top and bottom clamps push the racket out, should I be applying pressure or just so they just touch the racket? too much pressure will stretch the racket obviously.

Zymax 62 always seems so tight once I have strung to 24lbs, I wouldn't of said 24lbs was that tight??

"tightness" has a few factors to it:

    tension
    string property
    racket head shape/size

    tension higher will feel tighter
    stiffer strings feels tighter
    smaller head rackets feels tighter

so when you string at 24lbs, you are only fixing one variable. did you do the comparison on the same exact racket and string?

if you did that, then there is another factor:

    technique.

variation in how you string will also affect tightness. if you let the drop weight settle, that takes out the slack in the string (aka. (pre-)stretching). the longer you stretch the string, the more slack you take out of it and the less it loses tension.

The question is though, is 24lbs tight? I would have said this was middle range?

would the clamping of the racket also affect the tightness?

    tightness is very subjective.

for beginners, it is a bit tight.

for advance players, it feels like a noodle.

It depends on where you live too. Here, 24 lbs is considered pretty high tension. In Asia, such tension would be used by beginners.

Zymax 62 is among the smallest string available in the market which is 0.62mm.....24lbs for 0.62mm diameter string feel thighter than 24lbs on 0.66mm string. hope this will answer your quetion.... and you should consider all the variable highlighted by kwun too when you string a racket

Thanks for the responses, still not sure about the clamping though

This is the machine i have, will this also affect the stringing tension if stretch the racket too long? I also string mains and cross with a 2lb difference to bring back to shape? eg if 24lbs required it would be 23/25 main/cross

is there a reason why you are focusing on clamping while didn't address the few factors that i listed?
