It may even be more effort.. to handle the media and fans afterwards, on a WO :-) .
What I meant is there has been major critisism about "fixed" matches that was played, accusing players of not "trying" their max.
Giving WO is perhaps even more "honest" (at least for people placing bets and gambling on the matches) than to play best effort.

I think we are in a mess because we are talking about different things.

To me;
(1) Retired = Match played but stopped half way and a victory is awarded.
(2) Walkover = No match played and a victory is awarded.
(3) Match-fixing = Match played with a pre-determined result, violating the rules of the game and often the law.
I think this thread is about (1) and (2). Let us leave (3) out.
Although (1) and (2) are not considered as violating the rules/laws of the games when victory is given to teammates, I know some of us will suspect some foul/unfair play.
When victory is given to non-teammates under (1) and (2), usually no one will say that it is 'unfair' play.

I was once watched the MS final of 1997 WC, Sun Jun Vs Peter Rusmussen.
Its was a Sun Jun who got injury in his tight but Sun Jun's never give- up attitude thats impressed me so much......obviously, the injury was a 'genuine' one, Sun Jun has to asked for medical several times and still insisted to play on despite the pain he has to suffer........thats the spirit of sport.
People always said, we only remember the winner, no one cares about who is runner up but for me, Sun Jun's spirit impressed me and i still have the impression of how he played more than Peter Rusmussen's......in that match.
Of course, this match was played not between team-mates la........LOL

Btw, during the recently concluded denmark open, Jiang yan jiao conceded a walkover to wang yi han. What's the reason given this time?

Maybe JYJ role is as a spoiler to halt the progress of other formidable players from reaching the SF and have a shot at the titles.
