    I hope this hasn't been thoroughly done before but I have been thinking about my smash return (technique wise) and would like input from anyone about ANYTHING that pertains to the SMASH RETURN. THANKS, anything helps.

    P.S I watch those Indonesians do it (Tony and Chandra in the Olympics final) and seems like mine doesn't look like them, does anyone know how they do it? :p

    Practice? I think if you were to ask Chandra personally, the one thing he would tell you is practice and other small pointers. You can try drills where someone is intensely smashing and you're defending and you can practice technique or mimicing what Chandra does or whoever you want to copy. Stay on the balls if your feet and be ready. Try to even out your area that you have to cover. e.g. half court stay at a good range where you can cover both forehand and backhand and as well as steep smashes.

    Same thinking applys,
    If you are returning short, make it short;
    if you are returning long, make it long;

    not half way through!

    A very good answer. NEVER hit to the midcourt!

    It may be too late, if you do this... As far as I know the 'trained' players often already know what you will do next and move into position to intercept. Some more, the good players will seldom give you a chance to even smash!

    But he's right though - lots of practice is required. To more you play, the more you will be able to 'read' your opponents game, something which I think differentiates between the intermediate and advanced level players.

    all there's to do is just practice and practice some more and like bluejeff said, short return better be short and long better be long, never in between. I've been having trouble with my smash returns lately, in fact it's probably the key reasons for why I did so poorly in the last tournament I played. Just practice and practice....:rolleyes:

    The key to a good smash return is a good eye and fast reflexes. I also believe that practice is also key like what jwu said.

    I think it's mostly a doubles return move. And in this case, it's very much angle that's important, over power.

    hi.

    if possible hit back to the opponent.... as after smashing he may not regain his balance on time.. if not.. drop net or push the shuttle.
