Sorry can't, Can only imagine North Korea and some African countries don't. Could certainly do with more being televised in the UK I can say that for certain.

I can imagine quite a lot more countries ... That statement was just ridiculous: you can pretty much discount South America, Africa, most of Europe and the Middle East. It's probably a typo and should have been 16 instead of 160 (but they probably count that 1 minute a year, broadcast on local news of locally held international tournaments, as well. But even then, 160 is a ridiculous number when we don't count the Olympics as a BWF event which it isn't)

Probably, but they do specifically mention the youtube channel as in addition to ... (not to mention the specific wording of "televised"?)
But hey, whatever makes the sponsors happy

Friday, May 24, 2013 - Text by Gayle Alleyne | Edwin Leung

    Excerpts:

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) yesterday welcomed Chinese car company, Chery Automobile, as a partner and the “Official Car” for all BWF Major Events.

The four-year contract – from 2013 to 2016 – was announced at a press conference at Putra Stadium for the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This was attended by BWF and Chery officials, including General Manager of Chery International, Zhou Biren; Chery’s Vice President, Zhang Gui Bing; BWF Vice President – Europe, Gregory Verpoorten; BWF Chair of Marketing, Nigel Skelt and BWF Secretary General, Thomas Lund.

...Both organisations highlighted their similar values such as a shared passion for badminton and the desire to promote and spread core values associated with the sport such as excellence, professionalism, integrity and equality.

Another sponsor for BWF can't be a bad thing.

Hmmm... it's even shaped a bit like a badminton bird.

If Toyota or BMW were to sponsor BWF events, I think badminton will be a popular sport worldwide!!

Think it was restricted in only a handful of countries so let's assume available in all countries where YouTube is not blocked nor belong to the above list (so that excludes some small countries such as China and India ). Even then this view count pales in comparison to tv viewing numbers ...

It was blocked in Canada; I think USA as well. Anyone else out there who can confirm if the BWF live stream wasn't available for SC?

Yup, the SC was definitely blocked in Canada. Mind you, all SSP and SS YouTube live streaming have been allowed.

    Badminton – Progressing Through Science
Wednesday, July 24, 2013 - Text by Gayle Alleyne | BWF

    http://www.bwfbadminton.org/news_item.aspx?id=75754

    Excerpts:

...While BWF is putting its money behind individuals or institutions interested in researching sports-science projects related to badminton, research is already well underway in places like Russia where a study called “Eye Disease Treatment Through Badminton” demonstrated the beneficial effect of badminton on children’s eyesight. Many children stopped wearing glasses in two month after taking special badminton lessons three times a week.

This revelation was made by Chairman of the Russian Badminton Federation, Andrey Andropov, at the 25th FISU (French acronym: International University Sports Federation) Conference which took place in Kazan, Russia, last week as the 27th Summer Universiade drew to a close.

...Meanwhile, the BWF Sports Science Commission will soon award US$40,000 in research grants to persons and/or institutions for sports-science projects related to badminton. The world-governing organisation hopes this initiative will raise awareness of badminton as an area of study and to encourage greater investment in research in the sport by universities. BWF is seeking to build knowledge of badminton in the following areas:

    • Physiology
    • Biomechanics
    • Sports psychology
    • Performance analysis
    • Match analysis
    • Sports Nutrition
    • Sports Anthropometry
    • Sports injuries/injury prevention

Prospective awardees will be judged on the following criteria: relevance; outcomes; originality; quality; mechanistic insight and immediate impact. Applicants for the 2013-2014 grants will be notified in late August if they have been successful.

The Commission is mandated (1) to encourage and widen interest and investment in applied research in badminton; (2) to improve the level and quantity of scientific material available to players, coaches and badminton practitioners and (3) to contribute towards the increased knowledge of performance and safety at the international level (of coaches and players).
