    Default Sea games indonesia

This year's SEA Games in Indonesia again unearthed a number of 'exotic' events some of which I've heard for the first time.

It depends on how you look at it. As a regional sports extravaganza the SEA Games tries to introduce some unusual domestic sports/games to showcase their existence and maybe to create more fun and excitement rather than the usual dominant Olympic-style events.

So I guess we should widen our outlook and embrace them as part of the SEA Games spirit.

Hockey omitted from list of sports for the 2011 SEA Games

    By S. RAMAGURU

KUALA LUMPUR: It is confirmed. Hockey will not be featured in the SEA Games in Indonesia in November.

But there is a possibility that the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) may hold the SEA Cup to make up for hockey’s exclusion from the regional Games.

The SEA Cup was first held in 2009 when hockey was not included in the Laos SEA Games. Bangkok hosted the SEA Cup and Malaysia, represented by the Project 2013 team, won the title after beating Singapore in the final.

The 26th SEA Games, which will be held in Jakarta and Palembang from Nov 11-25, will have 43 sports featuring 542 events.

There will be six new events, which the host country are allowed to select. They are bridge, paragliding, roller sports, shorinji kempo, vovinam and wall-climbing. These sports will have a total of 72 events.

Vovinam is a Vietnamese martial arts (with and without weapons) while shorinji kempo is another form of Japanese martial arts.

The Olympic Games sports included in the programme are archery (recurve and compound), aquatics (diving, swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo), athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football (futsal), golf, gymnastics, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball (beach and indoor), weightlifting and wrestling (freestyle and grego).

Sports from the Asian Games which have been included are baseball, billiards and snooker, bowling, karate, sepaktakraw, softball, soft tennis and wushu.

Six sports from the previous SEA Games retained are chess, fin swimming, pencak silat, petanque, traditional boat race and water ski.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary general Datuk Sieh Kok Chi confirmed yesterday that the Indonesian organising committee decided on the 43 sports last week.

Lightbulb SEA Games Logo Launched, Indonesia is Ready

Indonesia’s readiness in hosting the 26th SEA Games was marked by launching the official logo of the event during a special ceremony kicking off the 300-day countdown to the Games at Tanah Airku theater in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Jakarta, on Jan. 15 organized by the Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc).

The logo, featuring mythical bird Garuda which also the national symbol of the country, represents strength, while its wings glory and splendor.

The upper green strokes describe the nation’s islands, forests, and mountainous terrain, while the blue strokes mean the vast Nusantara ocean which unifies differences. The red strokes represent eternal flame of courage, zeal, and passion to give the best for the country.

Beside the logo, the organizers also launched slogan “Indonesia Ready” to show that the country is ready to host the Games held in Palembang and Jakarta, Nov. 11-22.

The launching was attended by ambassadors of the participating countries of the Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin and representative of Jakarta Provincial Government also attended the ceremony.

Indonesian top athletes and former athletes who bring pride to the country also took part in the ceremony, such as shuttler Taufik Hidayat, cyclist Santia Tri Kusuma, and swimmers Richard Sambera and Elsa Manora Nasution.

Rita Subowo, President of the Indonesia National Sports Committee (KONI) said the 26th SEA Games, which will be the fourth SEA Games hosted by Indonesia, will be a great momentum to bring back the country’s good old days where Indonesia topped the medal count and won the overall title.

“It is the right time to clinch the victory,” Rita said.

State Minister of Youth and Sports, Andi Alifian Mallarangeng said the launching shows that Indonesia is ready to host the event well.

“We hope that the ceremony would invite Indonesian people to welcome the event and become a good host,” Andi said.

Inasoc Chairman Rachmat Gobel said succeeding the Games is not only the obligation of government, KONI, or organizers.

“It is the nation’s duty, too. We need your support,” he said.

South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin said South Sumatra is ready to play 22 of 43 sports to compete during the Games, including football matches which will be split in Palembang and Jakarta.

Just like Palembang, Jakarta also announced its readiness to play the other sports. The capital city has been renovating existing venues and building the rests of venues scheduled to be finished before October.

The concept, is about the mighty Garuda as a guidance and as a protective figure, flying high above the Earth Mother which is rich in natural resources of forest, mountain, and maritime.

This spirit seems able to inspire athletes of Indonesia, from Sabang to Merauke. Proud of their own country and compete in sportsmanship with friendly countries.

Lightbulb Indonesia Aims to Succeed at the 26 th SEA Games

Indonesia has every reason to succeed at the 26 th edition of the Southeast Asian Games slated Nov, 11-25. Hosting the Games in 1997, Indonesia came away with the outstanding achievement of winning 194 gold medals, 101 silvers and 115 bronzes. That was the last time Indonesia topped the medal standings before showing a continuously disappointing performance, at least until 2007.

Having improved its ranking from fifth place in the 2005 Games in Manila to third in the 2009 Games , Indonesia hopes to bring back its old time glory in the upcoming event to be held in Palembang and Jakarta. “The SEA Games will be a milestone of the awakening of our sports. Let’s work together to win back what we used to have, the overall champion title,” said Rita Subowo, Chairwoman of the Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc).

Indonesia's road to redemption was started with selecting the events that Indonesia feels they are competitive.

For that, the Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc) will propose a list of 536 events in 43 sports for approval to the other ten participating countries during a two-day SEA Games Council Meeting in Bali, Feb.25-26.

If approved, the Games is believed to be the biggest ever since 1997, when 490 events were held in Jakarta.

Palembang, the main hub, and Jakarta will each host 22 sports, with men’s football matches to be split between both cities. Indonesia must win more than 30 percents or roughly 160 gold medals to ensure a first place finish .

The Games is also hoped to help boost both cities economy through trade and tourism.

Sports to be played in Jakarta : archery, badminton, basketball, bowling, canoeing, cycling, dragon boat, equestrian, golf, fencing, judo, football, futsal, karate, kempo, paragliding, pencak silat, sailing, table tennis, taekwondo, vovinam, wushu.

Sports to be played in Palembang : athletics, aquatic (diving, swimming, synchronized swimming, water polo), baseball, boxing, bridge, fin swimming, football, gymnastic (artistic, ritmic, aerobic), petanque, roller skate, sepaktakraw, softball, shooting, volleyball (indoor and beach), wall climbing, water ski.

And badminton will be played (as usual) at Istora GBK Senayan Jakarta.
A hard task for INA to manage top position at medal standing after the last one in 1997 when INA hosted this biennial multi-sport event. Thailand should be the biggest threat.

Oh what a shame! Hope something can be done.

And many thanks to miksss for updating us on the SEA Games with some colourful photos. I must try to make a date with SEA Games Jakarta.

But Musi River brought back some sad memories as I recall a Singapore plane plunged into it with all its passengers some years ago.
