    Thumbs up 2011 Hong Kong Open SS: Quarter-Finals Fri 18-Nov

    .
    2011 Hong Kong Open SS: Quarter-Finals Friday 18-November

    Some South East Asian players are participating in the SEA Games this week, and therefore they won't be here in Hong Kong.

    Congratulations to those who have made it to the Quarter-Finals.

    For Live Streaming, perhaps BCers from different countries can post the links that are working for their regions. Different countries sometimes cannot use the same links. But many have found this link OK;

    Thumbs up These could be close matches

    .
    These could be close matches, and their likely winners (my guesses - and I have PAWed accordingly) are;

    Womens Singles
    * Wang Xin [3] (CHN) to defeat Cheng Shao Chieh [8] (TPE)
    * Tine Baun [7] (DEN) to defeat Saina Nehwal [4] (IND)
    * Wang Shixian [2] (CHN) to defeat Bae Youn Joo (KOR)

    Mens Singles
    * Peter Hoeg Gade [4] (DEN) to defeat Chen Jin [5] (CHN)

    Womens Doubles
    * Cheng Wen Hsing/Chien Yu Chin [5] (TPE) to defeat Ha Jung Eun/Kim Min Jung [4] (KOR)
    * Nina Vislova/Valeri Sorokina (RUS) to defeat Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl [8] (DEN)

    Mens Doubles
    * Tao Jiaming/Zhang Nan (CHN) to defeat Hiroyuki Endo/Kenichi Hayakawa (JPN)
    * Alvent Yulianto Chandra/Hendra Aprida Gunawan [7] (INA) to defeat Ko Sung Hyun/Yoo Yeon Seong [4] (KOR)
    * Lee Yong Dae/Jung Jae Sung [2] (KOR) to defeat Hirokatsu Hashimoto/Noriyasu Hirata [8] (JPN)

    Mixed Doubles
    * Ko Sung Hyun/Eom Hye Won (KOR) to defeat Joachim Fischer Nielsen/ Christinna Pedersen [3] (DEN)

    MD QF
    Hendra A. Gunawan/Alvent Yulianto Chandra
    [7] vs Ko Sung Hyun/Yoo Yeon Seong [4] - this might be the end of the road for AG/Alvent, but I think they have a good chance of beating Ko/Yoo. The record between them is 1-1 this year and they nearly beat the KOR pair in the Taiwan Open GPG SF, losing 18-21 in the rubber-set, having wasted a 7 pts lead after the interval! They just need to cut down on their unforced errors.

    Question PAWing for Pan Pan?

    .
    It's interesting to find that many BCers are PAWing for Pan Pan (in the XD QF). I'm still not confident to PAW for her.

    I also believe Hendra A. Gunawan/Alvent Yulianto Chandra have a good chance of beating Ko/Yoo.

    Well, HKO organizers are as intelligent as FRO organizers so LD will have to decide without knowing how CL and CJ will fare. Especially when CL s opponent is outside the syllabus. I mean, for Guru to take out DPY after losing the first game. That reveals so much of CHN MS rote training intensity. Beating well known players and losing to unknowns. That s why unknown MS should always relish meeting CHN MS. There s always a fighting chance up to QF when stamina is not a crucial factor yet. As for PG, he has a chance at the QF stage. PG used to get annoyed by CJ s yelping. If PG can treat CJ s yelping as a lack of confidence and get energized by those expressions, the outcome can be positive. Would the HKO crowd get behind PG? That would fire him up to become a young gun again for an hour, haha!

    I also think Lin Dan will "give up" today. He does not want to risk meeting LCW again so soon, especially after beating him last week, even though it's an exhibition match.

    Look's like CHN is preparing Hong Wei/Pan Pan to be CHN's no 3 XD behind Zhang/Zhao and Xu/Ma. Their job is to prevent pairs like the 2nd XD pair of each country, esp Nova/Butet, Laybourn/Rytter-Juhl, Lee/Chien, Songphon/Kunchala from getting into the Olympics. They accomplished that last night by beating Lee/Chien.

    In MD, they have been aggressively preparing Shen Ye/Hong Wei (the HKG SS is their 15th tourney this year) and Liu Xiaolong/Qiu Zihan (the HKG SS is their 17th tourney this year!) since last year, to take over the mantle of Fu/Cai and Guo/Chai. Looks like Tao Jiaming/Zhang Nan are also being prepared now.

    And they're off.

    LD settling into his new found rally mode.

    Shon's net shot hits the cord and trickles over LD 3-1

    LD lifts long. LD 3-2

    Short backhand clear by Shon. Easy smash by LD. 4-2
