Wondering how many of us out there have seen, let alone use the wooden metal shaft racket. I have in my possession 2 Grays of Cambridge Badminton racket made in England by Cambridge Craftsmen in the 50's, on top of that it's Wong Peng Soon edition. It's still in good condition with original leather grip. Also in my possession are 2 1970's Kawasaki wooden metal shaft racket still in good condition with original leather grip. See attachments.
Yes, kept them in wooden press to keep it in shape, in fact all 4 of them, 2 with strings and another 2 without strings. Know what, the Grays racket was presented to me by my late father on my 6th birthday that's 44 years ago.
Wow what a possession. I'd love to play with one of those but I assume they're too old/fragile/valuable now to use properly? Still, I'm interested in how a wooden racquet from the old days compares to a modern racquet. Nice thread
friend of mine got a couple of them that he uses regularly, have you play with yours lately? have to say not much power from them, but bless him, he is almost 70 and still playing (with lots of drops).
Hi AlanY, nope i don't play with it lately & in fact i never use it for the last 10 years though it can still be use and in good playing condition It's my prized possession. Try your friend's and have a feel of it and you're right not much power in it.
Yes Mr. Norak, it's old & valuable but not fragile. I won't use or play with it cause we can't get it anywhere now, it's so unique isn't it? Imagine I started using it at the age of 6 while representing my school and it felt so good then. Nothing compared to using one of the best badminton equipment in the world at that time.
