How High can you jump.
For proper jump smash it is necessary that you have a good leg strength and a good jump. I can jump 23 inches. Do I need to improve on it? If yes then how much? The way to measure jump height is given below.
Stand facing a wall with both feet completely on the ground and stretch your body to touch as high as you can, without lifting any part of feet off the ground. Mark this height. Now jump as high as you can by bending your legs but without taking any step forward before jumping. Mark this new height. You get 3 attempts to get maximum height. Take the difference between two heights to get your 'standing jump up' height.

would liek to help you..
but when i'm doing this i'm all cold, and tired...
i got 15 inches...(38 cm..sure you did it correctly?)
so either i jump lame (atm, or chronical) or your good...
i feel fine either way..i'm 1.93 (about 6'5'' i guess) and have an abnormal reach (long arms. still pretty fast)
i also doing some leg training..waiting for it to pay off..

I jump 20 inches/50 Cm. Unless you can place the smash, and do it hard from the backline, you donīt really need the jumpsmash
But you can jump pretty high b:

Average for NBA players is 28 inches. Max recorded vertical jump height is 34 inches(by a professional triple jumper). I don't have much idea about badminton players but most top class players seem to be able to jump really high.
Following exercises are recommended for increasing vertical jump:
1. Squats: I have started doing squats in gym and it has increased my jump height by 2 inches in last two months.
2. Practising vertical jump: It may seem odd, but practising vertical jump helps a lot.
3. Box jump(Isometric exercise): Here you basically jump from a box of height(between 12 to 36 inches, start with less height and slowly progress with exeprience) and on landing immediately jump back to the box. This exercise also helps making you faster on your feet.
With 21 inch jump I could never jump smash properly. Even with 23 inches my smash comes slightly after I reach the maximum height, but it is much better then before. So I was wondering whether I need to improve my jump height or my technique. Any idea how high Lin Dan or Peter Grade can jump?
Also jump smash gives really wonderful feeling, and is very useful for killing short lifts, especially in doubles.

how tall are you, btw? if you're 6-feet tall, you don't need any more jump..i guess...
19 inches average? wow..i must start practising right away..(altough in not 19-29 yet..thank god..)
still, like they all say. if your smahs is already steap, why jump higher?
my own body-mechanics are messed up enough for me to be able to smash harder when in a light jump ( can use more abs, and throw in my miniscule body-weight..) so that's my main reason for jumping..

I am 5'10". (By the way, 1.93m is 6'4". Wow u r really tall)
I don't think there's anything like steep enough. Even the best smashers doesn't get more than 50% kills from back of court, and it's the one that are both fast and really steep which are sucessful. So steeper it is better it will be.

ok, thanks for correcting me...i get a lot of "wow..your tall" but i like it, for now...
yeah ok, "steep enough" doesn't excist... but if your satisfied with teh steapness, then why train so much?

in highschool my highest recorded jump was 33 inches. with the training i'm doing these days for badminton, I'm sure its higher. I don't ever really jump my highest in a game tho... takes too long to get up and land then get ready for the next shot.

Don't forget that the Olympic weightlifts are some of the best exercises to develop maximum power from your legs. This is because it combines heavy resistance with explosive movements. These exercises mimic the joint angles that are involved with the stationnary jump, as well as the quick firing sequence of muscles that are used in jumping. Think about normal squats - you perform them slowly, so your body adapts to be able to lift a heavy weight slowly. That's why squats don't really improve your vertical beyond the initial conditioning stage.
Just check out some stats for the vertical jumps for olympic weightlifters - some of them can jump over 40 inches! That's higher than olympic jumpers, basketball players, volleyball players, etc.

During my basketball days.. i think i have a 3.5ft vertical . Nowadays i don't know. decrease already.. not much use in badminton if you have a high vertical leap except in jump smashes.

still gonna practise, my sealing is 4m high, and i got a little cork hanging at 19inches, can almost reach is, very motivating...
did about 40 jumps today...gonna keep it up..

What's really screwy is that for the longest time I had a better vertical jumping backwards than forwards due to badminton.
In my late teens my vertical was above the bottom of the badminton net ( based ona couple photos). At one point I could easly grab the rim of basketball net (I'm a little over 5'10")
50 lbs and four knee surguries later I'm lucky if I can touch get about 3" from the rim with a good run at it.
