Unfortunately there is no specific thread for "Singapore Professional Players" as was done for some of the other countries, so I thought I would like to add our current most outstanding and successful WD pair to the professional players' list so as to to monitor their performance, especially en route their journey to London OG 2012.

Both Yao and Shinta were brought into Singapore Badminton under the "foreign talent" scheme when they were in their early teens. Yao hailed from China and Shinta from Indonesia and are now adults aged 21 and 22 respectively.

Their biggest victory was during the Singapore Open Super Series on 20 June 2010 when they shocked everybody by taking the WD crown against formidable opponents ranked much higher. They were the first Singaporeans in 20 years to win a title at that tournament.

    In badminton action,

Singapore's women's doubles pair of Yao Lei and Shinta Mulia Sari made history yesterday at the Li-Ning Singapore Open Super Series 2010.

In the grand final at the Indoor Stadium, Yao and Shinta upstaged the Korean favorites in Kim Min Jung and Lee Hyo Jung 21-17, 22-20
to become the first Singaporeans to clinch a Singapore Open title.

No Singaporean has ever emerged victorious since the tournament's inception in 1990.

And for their efforts in beating the recently crowned Uber Cup-winning team, the Singapore pair took home some US$16,000 dollars in prize money.

Meanwhile, the men's doubles title went to Chinese Taipei's Fang Chieh Min and Lee Sheng Mu while the men's singles went to Sony Kuncoro.

The Indonesian upstaged crowd favourite Boonsak Ponsana 21-16, 21-16 to take his 1st Super Series title since 2008.

And over in the women's singles, top seed Saina Nehwal of India beat Chinese Taipei teenager Tai Tzu Ying in straight sets, to claim her maiden Singapore Open crown.

Shinta and Yao Lei out to end chokers tag

JAKARTA: Shuttler Shinta Mulia Sari left her homeland Indonesia for Singapore to be with her brothers in 2003.

It proved to be one of her wisest decisions because Shinta and her partner, Yao Lei of China, are now the number one women’s doubles pair in their adopted country.

The duo, who forged a partnership in 2008, have the potential to upset the stars from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand on a good day in the Games.

The team competition starts today and it will be followed by the individual events on Wednesday.

Shinta-Yao Lei made heads turn when they scored back-to-back wins in the India Open Grand Prix Gold and the Singapore Open in 2010.

The 22-year-old Shinta, the younger sister of Hendra Wijaya and Hendri Kurniawan Saputra, is grateful to her brothers for introducing her to the game.

“Initially, I was not too keen. They kept on giving me their old racquets and other equipment. Then, I took it seriously. I followed them to Singapore and made it to the national team,” she said.

“Things have been coming along well for me since teaming up with Yao Lei.

“We train under Eng Hian, who is the former Indonesian doubles coach.

We won our first Super Series title and it has given us a lot of confidence. But we have always choked in multi Games. We hope we can overcome the jinx this time.”

The duo lost to Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty in the final of the women’s doubles in Laos SEA Games two years ago. They also crashed out to India’s Jwala Gutta-Ashwini Ponnappa in the final of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi last year.

(Unfortunately Yao/Shinta lost to Thailand's Arronkesorn Duanganong and Voravichitchaekul Kunchala 1-2 in the semi-finals of SEA Games 2011.)

    Anneke-Nitya stopped at the semifinals

    Monday, December 12, 2011 08:46 AM

The Jakarta Post Sun, 12/11/2011 12:09 PM

The last Indonesian couple at the 2011 Korea Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament, Anneke Agustin-Nitya Maheswari failed to make their way into the final of the US$120,000 tournament after the duo were defeated by Shinta Mulia Sari-Lei Yao of Singapore.

Non-seeded Anneke-Nitya were defeated by Singaporean fourth-seeded 19-21, 21-16, 19-21 in the semifinals game that lasted only one hour and 15 minutes.

The Singaporeans earned the semis spot at the Korea Grand Prix Gold after beating the Chinese pair of Luo Ying and Luo Yu 21-18, 22-20.

The defeat was the Indonesian pair’s first loss to the Singaporean duo in the four times that they had faced off, head-to-head.

The pairs first met at the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold in May this year, where the Singaporeans lost 19-21, 10-21 at the second-round match. They met again at the final of the Vietnam Grand Prix Open in Aug. 28 and the Indonesians won again in the women’s doubles title with a 23-21, 26-24 victory.

The Singaporeans surrendered 11-21, 21-15, 20-22 after the first round match of the Macau Open in Nov. 30.

“We were not playing well today as there were many unforced errors that we made,” said Nitya, as quoted by the official website of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI).

In the final, Shinta-Lei will meet Eom Hye Won-Jang Ye Na of Korea, who defeated China’s Tang Jinhua-Xia Huan in another semifinal match.

Korea dominated the tournament by putting its players in the final of all five categories, with all Korean finals occurring in the men’s single, men’s doubles and mixed doubles, while China and Singapore each had their players in women’s doubles and women singles. — JP

(Unfortunately Yao/Shinta lost to the Korean pair in yesterday's finals 21-15, 21-16 in 45 min.)

    Thanks cobalt for updating.

Indeed we are keeping our fingers crossed for them and hope they can improve their current ranking with more victories. They are our best bet for an Olympic medal. :)

Congratulations to Yao Lei and Shinta Mulia Sari for winning the India Open GPG in convinving style.
They dropped just one game right through the tournament (in the first round) and won every other game without ever being stretched to extra points.
Good to see them resume their winning ways more often.
Their current BWF ranking has also improved to 15.

Yes cobalt, that seems to be a great win for them and in straight games too against the top seeded JPN pair.

Hope to see their match on TV and that they can surprise us further before LOG.

India Open Grand Prix Gold: Shinta Mulia Sari and Lei Yao bag Women’s Doubles crown – Badminton news

Singapore’s talented shuttlers, Shinta Mulia Sari and Lei Yao, have ended current year in an impressive way as they have bagged Women’s Doubles crown at the 2011 Syed Modi Memorial India Open Grand Prix Gold, which ended on Sunday, December 25, at Lucknow, India. In the title match, the Singaporeans crushed their higher ranked opponents, Maeda Miyuki and Satoko Suetsuna of Japan.
Mulia Sari and Yao have been placed at 15[SUP]th[/SUP] spot in the Women’s Doubles world standings. They were un-seeded in the India Open but delivered phenomenal performance and defeated the top seeds of the tournament and World Number Five shuttler, Miyuki and Satoko, in the final contest.

Singaporean ladies took 48 minutes to stamp their supremacy over their higher ranked challengers and won the title in a remarkable way. With this victory, Mulia Sari and Yao are ahead of the Japanese duo by a 2-0 margin in their two head-to-head meetings.

The first game of the title match was thrilling in the opening half when both sides played fast badminton. However, Mulia Sari and Yao dominated the game in the concluding part and won the set with a good score. They remained ahead of their Japanese rivals in the second set and took it with a decent difference.

The opening set progressed with an equal speed as both sides remained neck-to-neck until the score reached at 8-8. The higher ranked Japanese pair started to build a gap and reached at 12-8 when Mulia Sari and Yao geared up their speed in all areas of the court and levelled the score at 14-14.
Miyuki and Satoko failed to execute defensive strokes effectively in the second half of the set and remained trailing behind. The Singaporeans continued their positive play in the game and remained successful in taking the opening set with a four-point difference of 21-17.

In the following set, Mulia Sari and Yao remained slightly ahead of their higher ranked rivals throughout the game. The top seeded Japanese players tried to change their tactics but failed as Mulia Sari and Yao did not spare any chance for them to dominate the rallies.

Mulia Sari and Yao played with precision and finished the second game with a decent score of 21-18. This title match ended in straight games with a margin of 21-17 and 21-18.

New Year cheer for Shinta, Yao

    The Straits Times
    Dec 28, 2011

    By May Chen

After enduring a patch 2011, badminton women's doubles pair Yao Lei and Shinta Mulia Sari ended the year on a high, retaining their title at the India Open Grand Prix Gold.

The duo, currently ranked 15th in the world, beat Japanese top seeds Miyuki Maeda and Satoko Suetsuna (world No.5) 21-17, 21-18 to win the Dec 20-25 tournament.

Said Yao: "We have beaten this pair before so we were confident and went into the match wanting to win."

Grand Prix tournaments are third-tier events on the Badminton World Federation's calendar. Those in the top tier include the Olympics, World Championships and Super Series events.

Said Shinta: "We've not been satisfied with our results for the whole year. Now, we are more confident to go forward."

The pair have struggled to replicate their form of 2010, when they became the first Singaporeans to win a Super Series title, at the Singapore Open.

Their world reaning also tllk a dive from No. 10 at the heginning of the year to a low of No. 20 in July.

Other than a aconfidence boost, the pair also returned home from Lucknow with the winner's cheque of US$,480 (S$12,242).

But it is the 7,000 ranking points earned for their win that they will treasure most as they bid to qualify for next year's Olympics. Berths at the London Games are given to the top 16 pairs when the window closes at the end of April next year.

Said Singapore Badminton Association senior technical manager Chua Yong Joo: "It's a significant win because they had to play the Malaysians and Indonesians before beating the top-seeded Japanese in two straight games in the final."

"They've been progressing quite well in the last few tournaments," added Chua, referring to the pair's runner-up finish at the Korea Open Grand Prix Gold earlier in the month.

Yao and Shinta will next compete in the Korea Open, a Super Series Premier event, next week.

He said: "The next few tournaments are definitely going to be much tougher because the world's top players will be there but hopefully the confidence from this win will help."

Added Shinta: "The ranking points are very important for us now. We have to continue the momentum. Our job is not done just because we won this tournament."
