It's quite surprising to see Tommy Sugiarto competing here, as the top-seed. Why does he fly all the way from Korea to Italy and then back to India (assuming he didn't withdraw from the India GPG next week)? Didn't he know that there's another IC tourney at India this week? Nevertheless, we shall see whether he could win the title here as some 2nd-tier European players are also playing (like Pablo Abian [2] whom he would have to face in the Final). He should win both his matches today and might face a tricky tie against possibly Eric Pang [5] and Ville Lang [6] in the QF and SF tomorrow.
Tommy Sugiarto was pushed by Vladimir Ivanov in the 2nd set, as he won 21-14, 21-18. Tommy was leading 11-7 before the Russian staged a remarkable comeback and led 16-14 at one stage. He continued to lead 18-17 but alas, Tommy won the last 4 pts of the set to win the match. Up next is David Obernasterer in R16 also to be played later today. Inda Bagus Ade Chandra (another former Pelatnas player) has to crawl through the qualifying matches (winning all 3) and earns the right to face Luka Wraber in R32.
Indra Bagus Ade Chandra won his first match and will now face Vladimir Malkov for a place in the last 8.
Both Tommy Sugiarto and Indra Bagus Ade Chandra progress to the QF. As expected, Tommy will face Eric Pang [5] and Indra Bagus will have a tough match against Ville Lang [6]. If both win their matches, they will face each other in the SF also to be played on Thursday.
Tommy Sugiarto was stretched to 3-sets by Eric Pang. Pang saved 1 match pt at the second-set and actually took it 22-20 before Tommy rallied to take the third-set 21-15. He will face Ville Lang [6] in the SF this evening as Lang beat Indra Bagus in straight-sets.
Tommy was unable to progress to the Final as he lost to Ville Lang in 3-sets: 21-10, 19-21, 17-21. He had the chance to win it in the second-set, leading as much as 5 pts, only to lose the set and the match eventually. Typical problem afflicting INA players as always.
Russian shuttlers ruled the tournament as they grabbed 3 titles in doubles category. Yao Jie and Pablo Abian won WS and MS respectively. Final result : http://www.tournamentsoftware.com/s...F82894-D1DD-4996-A035-32DF976783F4&d=20111216
