    Hey folks,

I figured this would be a good place to post information on an upcoming tournament in Waterloo, Ontario. For those of you who are interested in playing in a low-level badminton tournament (C/D level players), the University of Waterloo will be hosting one on July 18 and 19, 2003. We usually get participants from all over Ontario and sometimes as far as Michigan.

The tournament usually fills up really quickly because it's really cheap and lots of fun! Emphasis is on competition and it is run tri-annually.

Draws: Singles (Friday), Doubles and Mixed (Saturday)
Format: Rumoured to be Two-Games Min
Limited: 32 teams for each draw
    Shuttles: Nylon
Location: University of Waterloo, Columbia Icefields

    Registration: Starts July 9, 2003, Ends July 16, 2003
Registration Fee: No more than $15/player, which includes FREE BBQ DINNER and snacks throughout the day.

Prizes: Lots of draw prizes and winner prizes are TBA

The details are still in progress but if anyone is interested please let me know and I'll try to answer the questions best to my ability.

I will testify that spots for the tournament tend to fill up very quickly. If you are interested, I would strongly recommend that you register early to secure yourself a spot.

    www.badmintonclub.uwaterloo.ca

Any earlier you won't be able to register yet.

Here's the email I got from them. NOTE that there are minor differences between my info and the one pointfore.ca got, i.e. the price for one draw ($10 vs $12.)

Btw, has the SOTF sponsor changed from Yonex to Pointfore? I remember Yonex used to be the sotf sponsor and for awhile pointfore sponsored its own tournament before stopping. (Or maybe that was Prizm...?)

There's only 32 spots open for per draw (i'm pretty sure), and most people sign up early.

    Hi there Alex,

The UW Badminton Club is pretty much a social club that tries to promote badminton as a sport. It's one of the largest clubs at the university and you'll find all different levels of players. I believe we'll be running the club 4 times a week in the Fall, 3 hours a day. The membership fee is only $15 for the entire term, and that gives you an opportunity to play in a couple of tournaments for free, attend events for free, discounts with Pointfore, etc. There's no better way to spend $15 in my opinion!

There's an organizational meeting at the start of the term so watch this page in August for the date:
    http://www.athletics.uwaterloo.ca/camprec/clubs/Badminton/badminton.htm

Also, check out www.badmintonclub.uwaterloo.ca for more information on this term.

Hehehe, that's interesting... looks like they've made a mistake somewhere. I've notified the organizers and they'll be fixing things up I think... I received the same e-mail that said it was $10 though but I'm almost certain that it should be $12 though.

Yonex used to be a sponsor several years ago but I believe they have backed away from sponsoring non-OBA sanctioned tournaments and other small tournaments and their rep disappeared from the region. The club can still get Yonex stuff occasionally from other stores though and put it into the draw.

We had Prizm Sports (Forza) sponsor us for one term but package cost was too high since the equipment was shipped from Vancouver. They have some wicked racquet bags I have to say! And of course Daryl's an awesome person to work with.

Pointfore has been sponsoring the club since I have some direct involvement with the club and I've been constantly working at getting the prices down for the packages. I don't make any money at all on sponsorship packages and I'm quite sure the packages are much better than competitors from my experience.

SOTF is pretty much open to any kind of sponsorship because the club just wants people to have fun! So if you want to sponsor the tournament then they can probably accomodate that! :)

I've got some old CPUs lying around... is that good enough to get BF.com in as a sponsor? :)

I've been asked to let you all know that the cost for one event is $12, and for two or more events the total is $15.

Also, the University of Waterloo servers are all down, which means the registration for the tournament is also going to be delayed since the website is on the uwaterloo.ca domain... Bummer. :(

From the Directors of the UW Badminton Club:

Correction for "Survival of the Fittest" (SOTF) tournament at the University of Waterloo. The price for the events should have been $12, not $10.

Due to technical difficulties at the University of Waterloo, registration for SOTF will be delayed until July 10th, 2003 (Thurs) at 11:59pm, given problems are resolved.

We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for your patience.

Please pass this onto others who may be interested.

There will only be 6 doubles courts in use on Saturday. 8 Singles Courts on Friday...

Tight, but it all works out so that you'll get at least 3-4 games out of it for each draw!

Another quick update, the Men's Doubles and Mixed Doubles draws area already FULL as of early this afternoon, and registration only started last night!

You should receive an e-mail some time in the near future to find out if you've made it into the tournament or not...
