90% of players use BG-80

i was watching Badminton World on my tv station... Based on its report of WR points, i believe it is produced in October/November 2011.

one of the guest said 90% of players use BG-80.. is that true?

the last time I ask my stringer. his current top selling string was the nbg95. people seem to like it because the durability cost ratio is quite good.

Are we talking 90% of all players in the world? 90% of the professional players? 90% of the Yonex customers?

That's a very vague comment, and they would have to have the numbers from all the badminton product companies to actually get those numbers.

Moral of the story don't take everyone's estimates seriously, a lot of people can pull numbers randomly and make them sound true. I have no doubt that BG-80 is used widely by all players, but I'm not sure about it being 90%.

It would be sad if NBG95 ever got really popular among the newer players. The thing is so slippery, slices are so unstable that they will never learn to slice/slicesmash/tumble/brushkill, which are some of the funnest parts of badminton. Also NBG95 smashes somehow go fast but lack that penetrating power, I dunno how to explain it.

Its probably not bad for their very first string, but after that Id recommend never to touch that stuff again unless you really are sure of what you intend to do, i.e. your game is completely based around massive gansta power...

I see quite a lot of 68ti amongst the girls (softer is a bit nicer I guess). 65 (higher tensions) and 80 for the rest. Dont see many bg66, maybe thats more in the asian countries where stringing costs are much lower.

The only bad thing about bg80 for me is the durability. And then its a tradeoff between having bg80 at lower tension (so more durable, and better racket safety), vs bg65 at a higher tension.

Using NBG98 which I quite like (but expensive).

Anyone try Babolat Micro 0.67 - Compare to BG80 its a lot sharper and better control and replusion and retain tension very well

Id love to use even thinner strings, but at NZ$15 or NZ$22 labour for a restring (not including string) I think the 66s are out unless you have your own stringing machine. I suspect Aus/US/UK are similar in stringing prices.

I am so jealous when I see people talking about the prices of string, the price of the string itself has never been relevant for me .

Bg66 =0.66mm
BG66um= 0.65mm
BG66S = 0.68mm
and of court the material used also different.

I think in Malaysia, the most famous string is still BG66 even though there is a price hike of late.

I think the original post's comment must have been for professional players in tournaments, rather than amateurs. I saw a stringers list from the World Championships once (years ago) and it listed the players names, rackets, strings and tensions. BG80 was the most popular by far, over half the players were using it, but certainly not 90%.
