Thomas and Uber Cups - the alternative

The winners are already a foregone conclusion even before the preliminaries were started. It’s about time we have an event like Ryder’s cup with China against the rest of the world, may be every two years. I’m sure China is up for it but just not quite sure the ROW can gel together like the Europeans for the Ryder’s.

We also need a new format as if we keep the current format with 5 matches, 1 for each individual event; China will still win. To counter that, we probably will have 3 or 5 matches for each event to exhaust China’s talents pool.

If you look at the current ranking for MS, ROW has

    Lee Chong Wei,
    Peter Hoeg Gade
    Sho Sasaki
    Kenichi Tago and
    Lee Hyun Il.

Wouldn’t you want to see them battle it out against

    Lin Dan,
    Chen Long,
    Chen Jin
    Du Pengyu, and
    Wang Zhengming?

ROW should have the advantages over China for the 5x5 format but on the other hand if we play a 3x5 format (3 matches for each event) that should be more even between the 2 teams.

There used to be the Asia Cup for men. That was a format of top 2 singles and 1 doubles. Couldn't last long after the Asian financial crisis.

Interesting. China still has a big chance of winning against ROW.

Let's say we do 2/3 for each event.

    MS
Lin Dan vs LCW - In favor of China
Chen Long vs Peter Gade - In favor of China
Chen Jin vs Sho Sasaki - 50/50
Result: 2/3 in favor of China

    WS
Wang Yihan vs Saina - In favor of China
Wang Xin vs Tine Baun - 100% lol
Wang Shixian vs Schenk - 50/50
Result: 2/3 in favor of China

    MD
    Cai/Fu vs Jung/Lee - 50/50
Chai/Guo vs Boe/Mogensen - In favor of ROW
Hong/Shen vs Ko/Yoo - In favor of ROW
Result: 2/3 in favor of ROW

    WD
Yu/Wang vs Kim/Ha - In favor of China
Tian/Zhao vs Fujii/Kakiiwa - In favor of China
    Bao/Zhong vs Maeda/Suetsuna - Not sure
Result: 2/3 in favor of China

    XD
    Zhang/Zhao vs Nielsen/Pedersen - 50/50
Xu/Ma vs Ahmad/Natsir - In favor of China
    He/Bao vs Chen/Cheng - 50/50?
    Result: Could go either way

So China still has a better chance of winning for MS,WS and WD. XD they also stand a chance and MD is the only one where China doesn't stand a chance against ROW.
