He wants to continue his career in the army and maybe also feels that he has reached his peak.

^But Europeans peak later in their career, therefore can play later... Asian players tend to peak earlier and retire earlier...

I think its more of his shoulder. His been having chronic shoulder problems and I guess he doesn't wanna strain his arm any further for permanent injuries lol

Right. In that case it is pretty obvious why...he is 29 so doesnt fancy another 4 year cycle to the next og. There is often a raft of retirements after og.

I guess the army comment was a joke. Jung Jae Sung will turn 30 right after the Olympics. He made the decision long before he started having shoulder problems. That age is normal for Korean players and it isn't always entirely the player's decision. It seems that the BKA makes retirement a strong suggestion so that younger players have their chance. Ra Kyung Min's intended comeback in 2009 was nixed by the BKA for that reason. Cho Gun Woo, Shin Baek Cheol, Kim Ki Jung, Kim Sa Rang, Kang Ji Wook, among others, could be contenders by the time the next Olympics roll around and there will again likely be only four spots available.

I'll definitely miss the match-ups between JJS/LYD vs CY/FHF. Their matches are just classics. At 32, I think we'll soon be hearing about CY's retirement as well.

I thought CBA also somewhat around the same or more than 8 hours training per day... Well obviously LD is more than that, for sure..

Yeah me too...I like watching the games between CY/FHF vs LYD/JJS.. fast pace of game & displaying high quality of badminton Mens Double placement, accuracy & Speed....
Well.. if Cai Yun retired, i hope CBA might try to pair FHF with Hong Wei, it could be another boom

I think that's lame. Players should play as long as they want.

I absolutely agree with you, i am a big fan of Cai Yun as well...However Cai Yun is lacking on smashing power, and he compensated it with the greasy fast speed he is able to pull through, tricky yet adorable as well as tight net shots & several fake smash which turns to be a good drop shots which let LYD/JJS jumping up & down retrieving that shots.
At the end, he needs to call it a day on his wonderful Mens Double career. In my opinion, judging on the current CBA Mens doubles players, Hong Wei is quite exceptional & pair him up with FHF will not be a bad idea. He just need to gain more tourneys experience & masters all his skills..
