Indeed that's the brute reality in China. You simply have no room to falter, slacken a tad too much,be out of form a little too long, possibly even just maintaining your skill without improving may not be enough - always at the back of your mind is the ever present danger of being replaced by existing or new players snapping at your heels. Without question,to be a WS player in China is the toughest thing in the sports world. Offhand,we can easily name 7 players capable of taking each other's place and it doesn't stop there: Wang YH, Wang Xin, Wang SX, Li XR, Jiang YJ, Han Li, Chen Xiaojia...and the list goes on. That's why in team championships, they are especially nervous, under tremendous pressure which often cripples their play causing them to lose to opponents they usually beat under normal circumstances.
Precisely,in China, national honour and glory is primary, their personal achievements and interests secondary,so unlike many Western professional players who think nothing of not representing their country (there are notable exceptions,of course, such as Roger Federer flying to Beijing 2008 OG to play for Switzerland, eschewing the money he could have won playing elsewhere during that time).

What a BS example is that (aside from being wrong altogether)? Oh poor RF skipped a tournament where he could earn a penny more

.
Like he went there for the glory of Switzerland and not for the Gold medal to add to his list
And just because representing The Country isn't the raison d'être doesn't mean they think "nothing of it". It is such a generalization, it's is insulting
.
