Sourabh Verma is another young player from India who holds the promise of making it into the top level of International badminton. He is a singles player with smooth and deceptively quick court coverage, and an effective smash.

The year 2011 was a seminal year for him, when he broke away from the lower rankings and began climbing his way up fairly rapidly. He was ranked 320 around the end of 2010, but the following year saw him introducing a new dimension to his game, and the result was that he ended 2011 ranked 50.

Sourabh (also spelt Saurabh in many pages and sites) began playing badminton in his small hometown of Dhar, in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. There was not much by way of facilities or infrastructure for a kid who fancied a sport few played, and so he practised his passion in an unused library in a corner of the ancient town. Luckily in later years there, he had a willing partner to practise with - his younger brother Sameer, who has also caught the attention of fans everywhere, and is breaking into the international circuit.

With his boy-next-door good looks and charm, Sourabh has already proved a crowd-puller at tournaments all over India, and is making a name for himself in the international circuit. He has many reputed scalps already in his bag, including Sony Dwi Koncoro, Suppanyu Avihingsanon, and Tommy Sugiarto.

If proof is required that Sourabh takes his game seriously, it is the last match he played with Alamsyah Yunus, at the Thailand Open 2012 earlier today.

Sourabh had lost to Yunus in the one earlier encounter at the INdia International Challenge last year, but this time he prevailed in a match that went the distance, with nothing really separating the two palyers in the end. This will only do him good.

So he's now in the quarter-finals, where he is joined by his brother Sameer and good friend Sai Praneeth. Sourabh's next task is to prove himself against the seasoned and remarkable Sony Dwi Koncoro. Sourabh did win in their previous encounter, but this may count for nothing, as Sony appears to have discovered his second wind of late. A cracking match promises!

Uh oh. Looks like Sony is going to be facing a hot prospect.
The up-and- comer against the comeback kid. Should be a good match!

On Tuesday, March 5 at the qualifying rounds of the AE 2013, Sourabh Verma played 2 closely-contested matches, won both in straight games (2 in extra points) and is now through to the main draw of the most prestigious SSP event of them all.

It is indicative of his state of mind that he advanced against 2 players who are no pushovers - Brice Leverdez of France and Rajiv Ouseph of England, both top-ranked players for their respective countries.

On Wednesday, he will play his first-round match against the immensely talented Hayom of Indonesia. These two have never met before.

One could argue the Rajiv was softened up for Sourabh by Anand Pawar. That was a close match too!
But I am quite excited with Indian prospects this year at All England.

Sourabh has done well in his outing at the All England; he's knocked out some pretty good players, and given TMN a hard game. I'm sure he will improve and see much better results in future SS and SSPs this year...

Congrats to Sourabh verma for winning Iran Fajr international challenge 2014 and Austrian International challenge 2014 both of which concluded last week and yesterday respectively.

It seems like he is winning international challenges(tournaments) to get ranking points which are very much useful in deciding the players from a country to play Asian games, common wealth games and thomas cup etc.
