Practice trying to hit areas either on the court or on your opponent. This will help you focus on placement and technique. Power is the next progression on. Once you can hit these areas then you can increase or decrease the power of the smash.

Some people have weak backhands so I sometimes smash at their backhands.. I also fake. I'll jump up ready to smash but then I just tap/drop it. There are times when I just smash at the body but some people are very good at returning those.
Random is great. I've accidentally smashed at people at their necks and even face.. make sure you apologize though!

I would say depends where you smash from.
Remember that not all smashes are to win a point, some are to set up for a bigger smash. You can half-smash by using just the wrist, cut/slice smash and full smash. Usually a full smash is used to actually WIN the point, so don't do it all the time unless you know it'll be a winner or else they'll just return it and you could be out of position
I would say vary your smashes more. Change the speeds of your smashes to confuse the opponent, because if you hit at the same speed all the time, they can adjust and return it quite easily. Sometimes it's actually the slow smashes that gets them, even at professional levels. And don't forget you have a drop shot in your arsenal, don't rely too much on the heavy smashes. You have to set yourself up better before hammering the final blow
