Does anyone actually understand the rules for shirt sponsorship. If so, can you please explain exactly how large the sponsors advert can be on the front of a shirt. I need to understand what dimensions are allowed rather than the size of lettering.

I have contacted BWF twice over this and nobody has actually given me an answer.

I have checked BWF website but do not understand the rules - and I'm not stupid! They are not very clear at all.

    Many thanks

So im guessing you know the correct lettering regulations on font and size? For adverts this is what i've read/know:

In all sanctioned events, including those organised by the BWF or by The Association (Badminton England), and multi-sport events, articles of clothing may only have advertising as provided in Regulations 15 to 18.

15.The shirt may carry advertising as in 15.1. to 15.3.

15.1. Advertisements may appear on the following locations: left sleeve, right sleeve, left shoulder, right shoulder, left collar, right collar, right chest, left chest. Each advertisement must be 20 square
centimetres or less. Other than front of shirt, only one per location; and there must be no more
than four in total National flags or emblems for the purpose of this regulation count as an advert.

15.2. Advertising contained in a band of uniform width not exceeding 10 centimetres; such a band may
be at any angle and may be on the front of the shirt, the back of the shirt, or both

15.3. If, in the Referee’s sole judgement, there is a clash between the content of the advertising in 15.2 and the event sponsors or the TV broadcasters, or if the content of the advertising would infringe
local laws or be considered offensive, then the Referee may limit advertising on the shirt to 15.1.

16.2. Each other article of clothing may carry one advert of 20 square centimetres or less.

17.The adverts in Regulations 15 and 16 may be the clothing manufacturer’s emblem or that of any sponsor.

I'm a certificated umpire, but not even I dare to remember all the rules about shirts. Too much and too confusing :p

Thanks guys but I still don't have the answer.

So the lettering can be 10cm high- but how wide can it be?

Rule 16.2 above means an advert of square 20cm is not big 5x4 2x 10 This can't be right. Look at the Fex Ex logo on China national shirts - that's way bigger than 20 square cm. And Proton/Maybank on Malaysia shirts.

Somebody must be able to interpret these rules but i can't get an answer.

    Paul,
it says 20cm2 for non-front and non-back locations ie sleeve + collar etc

As the width of lettering is not mentioned, there is no limit in this regard for front/back adverts.

My interpretation of the advertising rules shown here is as a set of restrictions rather than a set of instructions - if something isn't restricted, it's fair game. Logically, this is the most sensible way to form these kind of rules.

Many thanks for the link. Obviously I am looking for something that does not exist here. As Amleto says, the rules are a set of restrictions rather than instructions. There is no mention of the size advert on front centre of a players shirt. Crazy.

Thanks for your help guys, it's really appreciated.

Don't think there is a restriction as long as it is contained in a band with max width of 10cm (in this case the height). This is separate from the 20square cm one of which the Bundeswehr logo for some Germans is an example and the Citroen logo for China ...

That's what i am thinking. So as long as the lettering is no more than 10cm high, it looks like the width of the advert can be any size.

I'm not sure whether it has to be all letters or letters and a logo.

I may have to contact BWF again, but they seem pretty useless at responding to questions.

Seem to recall I've seen combo's of letters and logo. Like a shop logo coupled with internet address underneath but not completely sure I remember that correctly [IMG]. I guess asking Badminton Europe would probably get you a better response [IMG]

I know China's uniform were illegal back then (too many adverts) before they allowed more adverts to be added recently. But the BWF never told them they had to change their shirts.

    Paul,

I believe the 10 cm height rule is the main concern for you i had a look at some of the old shirt i have and the sponsors stuff is 25 cm across. I'd email badmintoneurope they tend to be ok at dealing with this kind of thing.

This is his personal sponsor, not Association sponsor.
