Computer Build advice

As of current date, my system is starting to have some delays i.e. I would like it to run faster. After all, it is 5 years old which I think has been good value.

Functions would be for photo editing and video editing/rendering (processor intensive)

Of course I want one of those Ivy Bridge processors. 3770

16 GB RAM

How about MB? I looked up the Gigabyte range but didn't understand the differences between them and what is better for video or photo. Currently I have an ASUS that's long in the tooth.

Video card - NVidia of course - but which one? I think the one that was demonstrated in Shanghai recently is a bit of overkill for me...LOL

Not sure it's so straight forward with an i7 processor.

Had a quick look at the computer centre looking at component parts.

(All in HKD) - i7 processor is about 2.5k HkD. MB about 1k. 16GB Ram in x2 8GB at 1.1k (1600 MHz). Add GPU, an SSD plus some HDD (so around 2.5k) and ready to go! Looking at somewhere around 1000USD, considerably cheaper than my build from 5years ago.

These are more or less best-buy guides and I guess these particular ones are more focused on gaming so probably have over-the-top graphics cards coupled with i5. So you could probably do the opposite trade-off and go i7 coupled with lesser gfx card ...

But to start of it seems the Gigabyte Z77X-D3H + 3770 boxed (save a few $ by not getting the K) & GTX570 (cheapest out of Asus, MSI, EVGA, Gainward or Gigabyte) should be a good base and eat up a good deal of that USD $1000 (not exactly saving $$$ with that GTX570) ...

So after reading up some more , let me take back the workstation gpu recommendation as it's really only "necessary" for certain software like CAD-like and the current consumer gpu's are as good if not better. Aside from that I read of some benefits from the usage of CUDA by Adobe software but specwise a GTX480 has the same amount of CUDA cores as the GTX570. Did read somewhere the 5xx series were supposedly better for photo/video than the new 6xx but wasn't mentioned whether the 5xx are also better than 4xx in that regard. Probably should be double checked ...
I'd probably skip on a gpu completely at first and see how SSD, 16GB RAM & that 3770 work out (can always add a gpu later)
Alternatively you could go for a X79 motherboard and see how quad-channel RAM works out, 4x4GB (but needs i7-3820 Sandy)
