    Default how to learn jumpsmash (jumpshots respectively)

    hi

    in the last months i have put nearly all of my effort into footwork

    now that i feel like a know how to run i want to discover and learn new things


    i have studied a lot of youtube videos from pros jumpsmashing and also learned (to a certain degree) the right smashtechnique
    however i never jump to smash (or jumpdrop etc..)


    what would be a good line of exercises to learn it step by step?
    just go out and jump and try or are there good steps which help to lead to eventually beeing able to make good jumpsmashes?


    2 more months before the season starts that should be enough to improve to use it in league matches

    Hi there,

    It's good to hear that you've been training hard to achieve what you've already achieved now. If you can fully understood the knowledge in regards with the correct preparation and technique how to do a basic smash and applying that knowledge correctly while playing then, upgrading it to a jump smash will be a smooth transition. Be confident in your abilities and everything can go very well.

    Before you master a jumping smash, it is better to know what makes a jumping smash different from a basic smash. In executing a jumping smash there is a component of "jump" or "physical elevation" where both of your feet is not touching the ground when the racket head makes a contact with the incoming birdie. Since there is a component of "jump" performed then the "timing" where your racket head makes contact with the incoming birdie while executing your smash will be the up most important criteria that will influence the quality of your jumping smash. This is true since if your timing is:

    - To early : Likely you will end up as a miss hit
    - To late : Likely the quality of your smash is unsatisfactory i.e flat and dull, trajectory and placement not as intended etc

    If the quality of your basic smash is satisfactory then theoretically you should able to produce the same quality of smash while executing a jumping smash if your preparation to do a jumping smash is perfect similarly like your basic smash. Since the technique in executing both smash is identical therefore:

    Perfect way to do a basic smash = Correct preparation to do a basic smash + correct technique to do a smash
    Perfect way to do a jumping smash = Correct preparation to do a jumping smash + correct technique to do a smash

    This correct preparation when addressing the birdie while performing a jumping smash that will determine the outcome of the timing of racket head contact smashLike a basic smash, your preparation in executing a jumping smash also needs to be perfect or otherwise the outcome of that smash will not be perfect which in result will end as a miss-hit for an example.

Below factor influence much the nature your timing while jumping:

    1. Footwork

    - Your backwards footwork movements just before addressing the birdie should always able to physically position yourself so that your view of the birdie will constantly be in front of you, not on top of you or worse beyond so that you can jump at an optimal angle of attack.

    2. Your view

    - As earlier mention, your view in regards with the in coming birdie should constantly be in front of you preferably around 45 degree angle so that you will have a clear vision of where you're going to jump while addressing the birdie

    3. The Jump

    - The trajectory of your jump should be a forward motion rather than and a pure vertical motion when addressing the birdie to produce that solid downwards racket head-birdie impact.

    The next step to further perfecting that timing is through pure , hard work continuous training. You need to do a lot of drills to sharpen this skill and no matter how much or informative the knowledge that you've gain about how to do the correct way to jumping smash but you don't diligently practice hard in perfecting it then you can't master and there is no short cut.     is it better to hit the shuttle when your body has jumped to the highest point, or is it better to hit when your body is dropping?

    i believe it should be hit when dropping but im not 100% sure.

    Do lots of skipping and cross skip. Double skip also.

    best power when your body is falling down AND forward at the point of strike, as this will maximally transfer your body momentum/kinetic energy into the bird

    A very good question. One factor that influence the quality of your hit when your racket head makes the contact with the incoming birdie while performing a jumping smash is the level of physical elevation when the contact occurred.

    A hit at the highest point will give you an advantage to reduce the resistance provided by the net that the birdie needs to overcome in order it to be a valid smash and also the nature of steepness that the smash delivered. No point to have 442 km/h smash but out of 100 that being executed, all of them end up stuck at the need. However making a contact at the highest point while jumping does not necessarily will be an optimal height to produce the most solid jumping smash. This is true since you can jump vertically high at 90 degree and make a contact with the incoming birdie but its not an optimal contact point since the contact point is on top of your forehead and your racket swing motion is not as its full arc and your attacking view is not fully visualize.

    Therefore while jumping, your preparation should able to position your view and physical position first at an attacking angle to give you a higher chance for an optimal contact and combined that hit with the highest jump possible that you can make then your smash will indeed a deadly one.

    Sorry guys......i've been constantly giving double post here. I think the effect of regularly using double motion deception while playing has now affect my abilities to use my keyboard and mouse properly
