Yeah, swimming is the main factor for USA power. Athletics also contribute big number for them, 9 golds.
China finishes runner-up position with 38 golds, 13 golds declined from Beijing 2008.
USA will add 1 more gold in today's Olympic last day through Men's Basketball final.

You can make what you want of any table mitchell values total medals rather than golds in measurement which can affect nations up to 30 places in his tables. Also the interesting table would be investment per medal which is how UK sport measures things. Globally this is impossible of course how do you measure the value of the US collegiate system with its endowments against the vast state sponsorship and funding used in china especially when figures aren't always released.
At the end of the day its great that even small nations can have there moment of success due to the ability of a few athletes, hopefully individual brilliance will always occasionally shine be it from a small island in the Caribbean or a nations of millions.

Congrats to USA who top medal table once again, collecting 10 more golds than Beijing 2008, fantastic!
Top-10 medal standing, KOR jumped 2 rungs into big 5 while both AUS and JPN slipped out at #10 and #11 respectively. HUN made significant move, from #21 four years ago to #9 in London 2012.
Goodbye London 2012, see u Rio 2016

A bit surprised at the end result...was expecting 1 country to top the overall medal table and another country to top the Gold medal tally...
As for all the noise abt how there are way too many swimming events/medals and even track & field events/medals, it's okay, in the future let the IOC cut half (or even more) of those events and medals...i still feel the U.S. will still end up in the top 3 overall medal standings, which is pretty darn good...and if that were so, some countries will be affected as well (such as Australia, which gets a lot of their medals from the swimming event, might not even get any medals)..At the end, it is really up to each individual country to take advantage of what's given..

if you think there are too many medals for swimming,
have a guess how many medals are available for the paralympic?

It's amusing to see Gandalf without his staff in the opening ceremony of the Parallel Olympics.
And with short hair.

Add one more gold for NZ to their total from the shot putt after the original winner was DQed for drugs.
