Badminton England have appointed Jakob Høi as the new Head Doubles Coach for the GB programme.

Will we see any new pairings? I note in a number of european circuit touraments before the Olympics they were using a quite a number of different women doubles pairings.

    Whats your thoughts

I am kind of surprised that Jakob signed the contract because he left here in Germany to be nearer to his wife and daughter. I don't know if his wife can imagine to live in GB but she couldn't see herself living in Germany. Maybe he doesn't need to spend so much time as Britain's doubles coach as he needed to as the German head coach.

    Interesting you note about partnerships:

    MD:

    Adcock/Ellis - secure

But after this, there are a lot of players who don't really have a regular partner for tournaments. Mills, Ellis (Markus Ellis that is) Langridge, Van Rietvelde, Blair etc etc all don't have regular partners (in fact Blair won't participate with GB anymore)

WD: most the partnerships were split as none had a chance to compete in the Olympics, Mariana has retired (I believe) so now there is no longer any firm partnerships. I think when it comes to November/December you'll see the combinations they will be working with, be sure they will have been trying them out in training in MK.

XD: Adcock/Bankier should remain, Ellis and Wallwork will be pairing up for the next few tournaments (at least) with regards to the other partnerships, it's a waiting game. :)

    LD,

I agree mostly with your predictions :) MD below adcock/ellis new things are being tired out as some of teh younger players form partnerships. WD the new partnerships are kind of now formed with most players being told of whom they are partnering for the close future. As you mentioned this was started around may with certain players leaving/losing funding for various reasons i'm told.

Hopefully getting the new coach in will be a good sign of things to come and jakob and kenneth will form a great new group time will tell.

Adcock an Ellis are still under 25 which is more than enough time to play on for another Olympics (or even 2 if very lucky) Like I said there has been a lot of partnership swaps in MD, some of the younger players have switched to part time as funding and stuff has meant they will train mostly while studying.

WD is interesting, White and Wallwork may stick together, the problem is there is no real threat to non European pairs here as there is in other disciplines. Don't really rate Olver that much, think she suffered by many partnership changes, a few decent young players coming through but it's finding the right combination.

XD, think it will be quiet on this front for a while, like i said, wait till November and December, that's when the home tournaments are, so you'll get a better idea of firm partnerships that they want to run with :) it's also enough time for Jakob to get used to his players

08.08.12 BADMINTON England name new Head Doubles Coach
BADMINTON England today showed they are wasting no time in starting their planning for the 2016 Olympics in Rio by naming Jakob Høi the new Head Doubles Coach for the GB programme.

For the last three years the 36-year-old Dane has been National Head Coach in Germany, where he specialised in men’s and mixed doubles.

Before joining the German Badminton Association, he had risen from a being a successful club coach in Denmark to become National Under 19 coach and an Assistant Coach to the Danish team.

Performance Director Jens Grill said: “We feel Jakob is the right man to lead our doubles players to the next level.

“We have players in the world’s top 20 but we have seen during the Olympic Games that our players still need to move to a higher level. We are confident Jakob can take them to that level while at the same time bringing on the other promising doubles players coming through.

“We have more big challenges ahead with the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 and the Olympics in Rio in 2016. It is crucial to get Jakob involved at the very start of this new phase.”

Grill continued: “We have seen what Jakob has done with Germany, who are the most improved European nation over the last three or four years. We want him to bring that drive to the GB programme.

“He is an outstanding coach and will be an excellent addition to the team we are building for the next Olympic cycle. He will be directly responsible for the doubles disciplines, allowing Kenneth Jonassen to focus fully on our Men’s and Women’s singles.”

Høi said of his appointment: “I am motivated by people with a goal, and at best an ambitious goal. From meetings with players, managers and coaches of BADMINTON England it has been confirmed to me that I will meet a great organisation, a great team, and not least, a great potential of players.

“The attraction for me is to work in and influence the training environment, the culture and the individuals on a daily basis. By doing so we will get a chance to make good results better.

“I already have quite a good idea about the individual strengths and points of development for several of the players. I will be attacking all areas of development and once I get started at Milton Keynes I will be presenting them with a ‘game plan’ to take them towards our targets.”

BADMINTON England hope to have Høi installed at Milton Keynes in the autumn.

Indeed a little bit strange! Makes you question if he really spoke the truth about his reasons for giving up on his job as the german head coach!?

Read it a few days ago: must've been an [£] offer he [& misses] couldn't resist. Great steal in any case and best of luck ... [IMG]

Alternatively they [BE/Grill-Jonassen] got word of the news and went after him. I mean there are two months between these news items ...
Although perhaps some compensation should be paid as originally his contract ran until the end of the year ;).

I guess it's the money, Badminton England should have far more money to spend than the DBV has. The fact that he should start in autumn surprises me as well because his contract in Germany is till the end of the year.

    Not necessary to have compensation.

He could be using up annual leave at the end of the year so would leave the post early. That could mean a November start which is still autumn. He might even take non-paid leave.

Why did he decided to leave at this stage when Germany is on track to come close to Denmark's strength?

He has done so well in improving the women's doubles. Should have stayed back to find new pairs for the Men's doubles. It's about time to replace Shoettler and Kindervater.
