    Hi all,

A couple weeks ago whilst smashing during a game, I was getting sudden sharp pain in my shoulder, which felt like straining a muscle. I've tried resting & icing it for 2 weeks but all day everyday I get a constant dull ache in my shoulder and ibuprofen doesn't do anything for me, and it doesn't feel any better 2 weeks later.

Has anyone ever had this, and any idea how long it takes to heal?

    Thanks

You're going to have to be more specific as to where exactly on the shoulder. Diagrams or pics with indicator arrows will help immensely.

I've highlighted in green the area where it aches. I don't get any pain when moving/rotating my shoulder.

Hmmm...likely not muscle but tendon injury of the supraspinatus tendon or the long head biceps tendon.

Do you have any experience with treating the supraspinatus tendon? It seems the most likely cause (until I get to see a doctor). Googling around gives such different recovery times etc...

See a sports therapist. I had problems with my shoulders for a long time and the therapist gave me some stretching exercises which cleared the problem.

You're not going to like this, but to properly heal it you'll have to rest it a few weeks meaning no badminton or activities that can cause it to hurt. As diverdan suggests, go see a sports physio to properly diagnose and treat you.

Meanwhile do some exercises from this thread, especially pendulum weight and W stretch.

I hope GrandMaster Tedski's shoulder is that simple to heal :(.

I've tried the tests to work out what the problem could be and found the cross-arm test to be the only one that gives me pain to perform. Arm raised straight out in front, then slowly move the arm horizontally towards the other shoulder whilst keeping it straight. That gives me a sharp pain at the top of my shoulder (which i dont get if i try the same test with my other arm). It also seems to be the position my arm would roughly be in when performing a smash sideways on in badminton so makes sense to me.

Got to wait a week or more to get to see a doctor still...

That long to see a doc?! Meanwhile ice, rest, pendulum weight exercises as I've mentioned should improve it a bit.

Thanks visor. I've been doing the pendulum exercises and stretches and it has made a noticeable improvement. No more annoying ache all day either. Almost feels normal again :)

Glad to hear! :) But don't play yet, although I know you'll be tempted to! :p

I had what sounds like the exact same problem. A bad smash causing a shooting pain down my arm, enough to near drop the racket.I found it kept re-occurring too, didn't properly go until I saw a physio, gave some exercises to do which really helped. That along with a couple months off badminton. The hard part is not thinking about it next time you play!

Yeah, I know... when I play now, I'm wasting a few brain CPU cycles worrying due to my past shoulder and knee injuries. :(
