I have played casually for decades but just recently I have been trying to improve all aspects of my game. Until now I have never thought about how I smash, I just did it, and not very often. Now I have had a little bit of coaching and watched a lot of videos, and I have changed the way I smash. I turn sideways more, and earlier, take the racket back and stop, with a bent elbow, and then try to make it "swish". It still feels a bit unnatural, but when it works it is much more powerful and accurate.

But, I keep hitting the shuttle with just the tip of the racket. Any common reasons for that, and any suggestions for correcting it?

U r maybe taking it too high. Slow down the stroke, wait for it a bit more. Its just your timing is off.

just a timing issue.. practice with more fed lifted shuttlecock from a partner or just toss a shuttlecock up yourself.
