I was surprised, but he did play well last week to win the All Japan. Unfortunately I haven't seen the match between him and Tommy Sugiarto as well.

He has beautiful movements and strokes, but seems to lack aggression and initiative on the attack

Kento's next tournament is the China Super Series Premier next week. I believe this is the first SSP where he does not have to qualify? Despite not making it far in the big tournaments this year, he has made steady progress in his rise in the rankings. I feel next year he will make his big tournament win in a Grand Prix and even make it into the QF/SF of Super Series titles.

    Ranking 12/31/12: 90
    Ranking 11/06/13: 28

Just beat WR No. 13 Marc Zweibler 21-16, 21-18! Will meet Kashyap Parupalli who just upset Boonsak Ponsana. Hopefully he reaches his 3rd Super Series QF here.

Wow. How did he win so easily? I've seen videos of Parupalli and he's not a bad player. Very good at retrieving shots.

He definitely belongs in the Top 15 at least. He will face No. 10 Hu Yun who he has beaten before.

Too bad we got Chen Long - Daren Liew instead of Momota - Yu Hun on the live streaming. Would've loved to see the match.

Let's hope that someone will record it, like in this match:

    Kento Momota vs. Marc Zweibler

    ---

His third win against a Top 10 player (2nd against Hu Yun) and his first Super Series Premier semifinal! I thought he wouldn't reach that far until next year. He's going to face Wang Zhengming, surely the toughest opponent he's faced in his career yet.

    Lost to Wang Zhengming in a thriller -- 20-22, 21-9, 6-21

The first game was very close, see-saw game with both taking the lead several times. I gotta say, Momota looked very focused in this game. I was worried that WZM would destroy him with power, but Kento's defense actually held up quite well. Kento controlled the net and did well with his attack and deception. The second and third were not as good, both players took the game after one took a big lead. Momota looked a little tired in the 3rd game.

He should be in the Top 25 now after making the semifinals. His next tournament is the Hong Kong SS. He faces Hu Yun yet again... but this time HY has the home advantage.

Here's an even better quality video from the Chinese broadcast:

There was a great trick shot by Momota in the first game. I made these gifs:

Lost again to Hu Yun at Hong Kong SSP in 3 games. Hu Yun now leads their head-to-head 3-2, all 5 meetings has been just in the last 6 months. I wonder if Kento is getting tired of facing him in the early rounds of each big tournament. Hu Yun probably doesn't like it either, having already lost to the 19-year old twice. Next tournament is Macau Open, he is yet again in Hu Yun's area of the draw.
