League Tables of Top Players by Countries
I am creating league tables of top players by countries based upon data published by BWF.
There are 3 tables for the top 16, 32 and 100.

Not much surprises for the top 16 and 32, but the top 100 is quite interesting.
Indonesia top the 100 table with most top 100 ranked players, marginally more than the next 3, namely China, Japan and Malaysia with only 1 player between them.
Not only that, Indonesia actually top the MD, XD and WD (share with Japan) as well.
Another surprise is the mighty China only top in 1 category, WS (share with Japan).
And, Malaysia actually has more top 100 MS players (10) than anyone else.

The surprise for me is that Korea has 10 in the top 16, but only 13 in the top 32 ...

I am not that surprised, as there's a difference between quality vs. quatity.
1. Do you want to have say 2 players listed, but rank 1 and 2, or you want 10, only rank 91 to 100? To me, ranking after 32 is pretty much useless, as some rank 100+ can easily improve 30 spots, for a mini "hot streak".
2. CHN (and I believe it maybe true for a few other power houses) sometimes will send "no name" players for tournaments, and they have to start with Qualification round due to lower ranking. However, this "no names" can sometimes end up in semi or even champion. I believe ZYL's is a good example, if I am not mistaken with another player.

1: Unfortunately reality isn't a place where you can choose to have the top two players; you have to work and train. Ultimately there must be a reason or their absence in the 16-32 bracket, and the semantic difference between quality and quantity isn't it.

Nice one, AlanY. Thanks for the hard work

Be careful though. Unfortunately, this is exactly the kind of thread quite vulnerable to some chauvinistic comments & counter-comments. One or two "sensitive" posts might be enough to entice certain troublemaker to invade the thread, and then...

Looking at that last top 100 can anyone tell me, Does the fact that Indonesia have the most players by a big margin tell us that they are more prone to go independent(go it on their own) than any other country or is Indonesia spending more money than anyone else sending mass amounts of people around to tournaments?
I know there are a lot of tournament around SE Asia that is easy for them to get to on their own which might play a part, but you think then Malaysia would mirror them. Any ideas?Last edited by craigandy; 05-02-2013 at 09:04 AM.

Won't be hard to be in top 100, just participate in 10 ss tourney main round and you are there

Meh, as if the registration + flight + lodging + etc etc costs are cheap. While lots of athletes already find it hard just to find sponsors & funding, the so-called "badminton nations" send their athletes virtually to every tournaments out there so generously that some people begin to take their participation for granted
