A lesson for Malaysian sports officials

    By RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: The suspension of India by the International Olympic Committee should serve as a lesson to Malaysian sports officials with flippant attitude.

Former National Sports Council (NSC) director general Datuk Wira Mazlan Ahmad praised the IOC for suspending India and hopes that Malaysians will give serious thoughts to selecting office bearers to run sports programme.

The IOC announced India’s suspension on Wednesday after concluding that India’s Olympic Association (IOA) had failed to comply with the Olympic charter.

The IOC had been against IOA’s recent internal election processes, which they believe had involved tainted officials from the scandal-plagued organising committee of the 2010 Common-wealth Games.

The suspension will see India losing the IOC funding and their athletes will not be able to compete in all the sanctioned tournaments, including the Olympic Games.

“I applaud IOC’s decision. Electing the wrong people can get one into trouble. This is a good lesson for Malaysian sports officials. We must find the right leaders to run the sports associations,” said Mazlan.

“How many times have we heard of discrepancies in the election of our sports leaders. We hear of leaders who do not take the sport seriously. People usually think they can get away just because it’s a sports organisation.

“India’s case is a good example of how the appointment of wrong sports officials can tarnish the image and bring disrepute to the nation. I hope all sports associations will elect the right people.”

Wow ... sad day for India sports. But even their own press said that they could see the writing on the wall.

For Olympic events... but there's still 4 years to go till Rio, I'm sure the political grandstanding will be sorted out before then.
