Just watching a video this evening. Got this from a slow motion shot of Chen Long.

I noticed his grip. Not quite what I would have expected. vlcsnap-2013-01-01-23h44m20s252.jpg

I think that's pretty natural if you have to reach out a lot... ;-)

^ Ditto.. Or are you referring to the grip material being wrapped all the way up to the cone being unnecessary for singles.

As the two above posters already said, he's probably just grabbing the very end of the grip to reach further as a last resort

He's adjusted the grip to get the racket under the shuttle taking it low in forehand corner, many players do this

So many players use a backhand grip with the thumb on the bevel when taking a low forehand?

I hadn't realised it was so common.

It's a desperate shot... it's whatever grip that allows you to get the most reach and still get the bird back over the net.

haha yup agreed with you. the basic is to return the shot into the opponents court. that is the most important things.

    Agreed.

Looking at the picture, he's pretty late to the shot, probably too far away to be able to get a good lift.

Thus, he's probably going to try and put it over the net in this picture. Changing to the grip in the picture makes it easier to hit the shuttle you don't have to rotate the forearm in weird ways to get the racket face flat under the shuttle.

Normally you wouldn't need to do this as the shuttle isn't so low.

yes, this is what my coach is teaching me to grip......the harder part is the hitting motion - slice swing - forearm rotation.

i'm always desparate and so that kinda shot is very common to me, i have my fingers near the end cap of the grip even, and just lift the racket straight up for a lift just over the net.
