    Ranking for Men's & Women's Team

This ranking is based on the Ranking points of the 3 (or 2) highest ranked players (or pairs) of each Association, ranked on the current individual World Ranking lists. Even if an Association has only two or one player (or pair) ranked on the individual World Ranking list, the team of that Association is still ranked. Players non eligible to represent their Association are not taken into consideration.

To set up the team ranking list, each team is opposed to all the other teams in a computer simulation (round-robin), in 3 singles matches and 2 doubles matches using the Thomas and Uber Cups system. In each team the players (pairs) are placed in ranking order. 2 points are awarded to the winning team of each of these matches, the losing team getting 0 points. When there is a tie, which may happen when players of opposing teams have the same Ranking, each of these teams receives 1 point. The final ranking order is determined by the total number of points earned by each of the teams.

A virtual match won would give the team 2 points, a tie would give 1 point and a loss does not earn the team any points. The total number of points gained by a team determines their Team Ranking.

These team ranking lists are taken into consideration for seedings at World Men's and Women's Team Championships.

    Ranking for Mixed Team

This ranking is based on the Ranking points of the highest ranked player (or pair) of five individual events of each Association, ranked on the current individual World Ranking lists. Even if an Association has only one player (or pair) ranked on the individual World Ranking list, the team of that Association is still ranked. Players non eligible to represent their Association are not taken into consideration.

To set up the team ranking list, each team is opposed to all the other teams in a computer simulation (round-robin), in men's and wommen's singles matches and men's, women's and mixed doubles matches using the Sudirman Cup system.

These team ranking lists are taken into consideration for seedings at World Mixed Team Championship.

    The Sudirman Cup 2013 Format

Each tie is comprised of five matches, one each of men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

Teams play in divisions or groups where each team plays each other. The teams are ranked based on the overall strength of the Member Associations top players (one player or pair in each event – men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles) in the BWF World Rankings. Proposals are being discussed by BWF Council in May 2012 to use the newly instituted World Team Rankings to seed teams in future Sudirman Cup tournaments.

The strongest 12 teams comprise the top group which is sub divided into four groups of three teams. The remaining teams play as far as possible in groups of 8, subdivided into two groups of four. Variation in size of groups is allowed to accommodate all entries.

The top division or group plays two stages, a group play stage and then a knock out stage. The two top ranked teams from each sub group qualify for the knock out stage. The first knock out stage is therefore the quarter finals with the winners progressing to the semi-finals and then the finals. The draw for the knock out stage is held immediately after the last match in the group play stage is completed.

In the groups below the top division or group the top teams in each sub group play each other to determine the first and second ranked teams in the group.

The teams who finish second in the sub groups play each other to determine who finished third and fourth in the group, teams finishing third play each other for fifth and sixth spot, teams finishing fourth (bottom) of the sub groups play each other to determine seventh and eighth.

Teams finishing top of the group are promoted and teams finishing bottom are relegated thus ensuring very real competition throughout the Event.

Thomas and Uber Cups 2014 Format

A new format has been agreed for the 2014 edition of the Thomas & Uber Cup Finals which sees the end of the old qualifying zone competitions and instead the introduction of an expanded competition with 16 teams qualifying (each for Thomas & Uber Cup) in the following way:

    Holders
    Hosts
Next best 14 teams from the World Rankings(the world ranking for each team is based on the combined points total of the highest 3 singles players and highest 2 doubles pairs eligible to represent that team in the World Rankings).

    Continental Quota

The teams qualified shall include the highest ranked Thomas OR Uber Cup team from each of Africa, Pan Am and Oceania Continental Confederations.

There shall be a minimum of 3 teams from Europe and 3 from Asia (this total to be made up of the highest ranked teams from Europe and Asia and also to include holders and hosts where applicable).

    Group stage

Teams are drawn into four groups of four teams with each team playing each other once to establish a group ranking. The two highest placed teams in the group rankings then go through to a knock out stage.

    Knock out stage

A draw is held to determine who plays who in the knock out stage at the end of the Group stage. The first knock out stage is the quarter finals with the winner’s progressing through to the semi-finals and then the Final. There is no third place play off, both losing semi-finalists being awarded bronze medals.
