The general rule of thumb is head light/even balanced racquets for doubles, head heavy and some even balanced racquets for singles.

Both the racquets you have named are head heavy, so on the face of it it's probably not going to be the best for doubles. However it depends on your personal preference, your ability and who you play with.

If you're playing against novices (and assuming you're not) would it make much difference what racquet you choose?

You have to find the answer on your own through playing as many rackets as you can since racket is really personal preference.

Go with whatever you are comfortable with...that is the most important part in racket selection. There is no right or wrong, suitability etc when it comes to picking the right racket, you can test it or just dry swing it and get whichever you feel comfortable with...

What you have said is true back in the old days...with the old scoring system.
Assuming he/a player has reached a certain level and fitness, a good double pair nearly always has a strong smasher. In this sense, head light for doubles...?! may be not. Even Victor BS LYD is head-balanced at most.

I myself is one example of switching from head light to head heavy...

I play with VT80 in singles AND doubles.
It really depends on your personal skills.
e.g. Mogensen plays with a VT-ZF in Doubles but that does not mean that the VT-ZF is the best racket for doubles and is suitable for all.
For myself I can say that the defense with a head heavy racket is slower than with a head light racket but the smash is quite better.
Do you play more in the front- or rear court?
Such a head heavy racket doesn't really make sense in the front court - but on the other hand if it's suitable for you - why not.
If I had the choice between VT80 and AT900p, I would take VT80 cause of just better technology and characteristics FOR ME.

it will be specific to your playing style...

with the VT80, i easily hit too hard and it goes out.. and to me its not agile enough because my muscle group/type is different.
