hm okay.
the rulebook says:
so, the organizers basically can decide. still, i'm a bit disappointed they dont play qualies...13. QUALIFYING Principle of qualifying
13.1 Where entries exceed the required places in the main competition draw, the organisers are
recommended to play qualifying rounds under the supervision of the Referee, as provided for in
Regulations 13.2 to 13.8.

it could still mean they didn't have sufficient entries for qualifiers....

hm, maybe. funnily in the M & Q Version 1 (see column G and H in the excel table: http://www.bwfbadminton.org/file_dow...d=428648&tid=1) it seems they still had planned to play qualies. so they obviously had sufficient entries for qualifiers: 58 Main Draw, and 16 in Quaulies. But in Version 4 (http://www.bwfbadminton.org/file.aspx?id=430642&dl=1) they removed the qualifying entries, leaving 64 Main Draw entries...
all in all i think they had too less entires to play a good quali-tournament.

okay, i just got a reply from the tournament organizers. i asked them via facebook. they answered my question on why there are no qualies for the men singles: "because we are playing a 64-players draw and because of time-issues: on 4 courts we are allowed to play 80 games max"

Thanks for taking the trouble to find out!
If I'm not mistaken, BWF has stipulations for SS and SSP events that require the availability of 5 courts in the preliminary rounds, for exactly this reason. Otherwise, players hang around for hours waiting for their game and it affects their preparedness. And games continue past midnight!
remember the All England last year?

Yeah, the draw is pretty open, will be interesting to see who will take it home in MS. I think the winner of Boonsuk vs Du Pengyu is the most likely candidate to take it all.
I also hope Hu Yun gets past Viktor / Eric, he's so funny to watch.

hope malaysia MS and MD have to play well or go home with despair...

All other disciplines have 32.
Dunno why. Perhaps organisational challenges? Less courts? Or just insufficient entries? Sorry, I don't have the answer.
