Danes looking to redress the balance Date: 3/12/2013 http://www.badmintoneurope.com/cms/default.aspx?clubid=4685&m=619105&cmsid=239&pageid=5381 Excerpts: ...Two years ago in Vantaa, Finland the U19 team from Germany lifted the European Junior Team Championships title which was the catalyst for the German revival. All that means is that Denmark, for the first time in recent history, have a minority stake holding with only two of the European Team Championships in their possession... ...Denmark went into that 2011 European Junior Team Championships with a team full of young stars, including Viktor Axelsen, Line Kjaersfeldt, Kim Astrup Sorensen and Rasmus Fladberg and this year the Danes will be outright favourites to reclaim the title they lost in Finland. ...The jewel in the Danish crown is Line Kjaersfeldt who is fresh from recent wins at the Irish and Estonian Internationals and has already established herself at senior level with Denmark. ...On paper team Germany will have an extremely tough battle on their hands to try and retain their title but German team spirit is always worth its weight in gold and a very inexperienced German side will certainly give their all. The French will undoubtedly pose the main threat to Denmark which is a testament to the systems the French have put in place to develop their young talent... ...Traditionally the Dutch, English and Russians have always featured as medal contenders and these European Junior Team Championships have always thrown up a surprise or two in the past as the Ukrainians proved in Finland two years ago lifting the bronze medal.
Yigit’s chance to create history on home soil Date: 3/18/2013 http://badmintoneurope.com/cms/default.aspx?clubid=4685&m=621228&cmsid=239&pageid=5381 Excerpts: Turkey’s Neslihan Yigit (pictured) is certainly a star in the making and with star quality comes the burden of expectation to deliver results on the big stage. As an U19 junior there is no bigger stage than the 2013 European Junior Championships and this is without doubt Yigit’s opportunity to propel herself into the big time. Senior Experience in a Junior world The facts speak for themselves on the lead up to this European Junior Individual tournament. The facts are simple when it comes to analysing the women’s singles event as it is awash with a top class entry and all things considered there are at least 8 athletes who can claim the top step of the podium come Sunday 31st March. The pressure will be intense on Yigit to deliver but her vast amount of senior experience, which included a trip to the London Olympics last summer as the first ever Turk to do so, will most likely prove pivotal in her assault on the title.

Just noticed that Israel is also a participant at these Championships. Although not a part of Europe or the EU, I wonder what the rationale is for inclusion in the European Mixed Team Championships. I know that Armenia and Azerbaijan are countries that are listed as part of Europe as well as Asia, but Israel is listed only as a part of the continent of Asia. So I checked up the Badminton Asia Confederation site for the list of member associations, and sure enough, Israel was the only one not listed under the West Asia sub-region. Israel is however, clearly listed as a member association with Badminton Europe. Does anyone know the reason for this seeming anomaly?

In the 70's Israel was expelled from all Asian sports federations due to its Arab neighbors refusal to recognize the Jewish State. Israeli teams started participating in European competitions due to this forced hand basically
Thanks for the info, guys; I guess that explains it! Meanwhile, Germany moved past Finland 4-1, and Denmark went past Bulgaria 4-1 Mathias Mundbjerg appears to be one to watch for the future. Scotland blanked Armenia... should make someone here a little happier.
Yeah good effort by Scotland unfortunately short lived happiness as they are getting/gonna get beat by Turkey almost single handed by Yigit who is already 18, dunno what the regulations are but if you are 18 you aren't a junior in my eyes. cheats!
