Mixed Doubles Team to Provide Solid Base for Indonesia in Sudirman Cup

After successfully retaining the All England title, Indonesia’s mixed doubles badminton team must gear up soon for another big task at this year’s Sudirman Cup.

Dominating the All England last-eight round, with four pairs filling the spots, the mixed doubles team will spearhead Indonesian squad’s at the world mixed team championship held in Kuala Lumpur from May 19 to 26.

“We will start an intensive preparation immediately. There are two events before the Sudirman Cup — India Open Super Series and Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold — we can use as tryout competitions to see their progress,” national mixed doubles team coach Richard Mainaky told the Jakarta Globe.

Richard said he was more confident with his current team after all players performed well in recent tournaments, in particular the All England.

Moreover, he gave special credit to two back-up pairs who joined defending champions Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir in the quarterfinal. The pairs have surpassed their goals to help Tontowi and Liliyana clinch the final.

Fran Kurniawan Teng and Shendy Puspa Irawati outclassed Malaysia’s number one duo, Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying, in the second round, while teammates Mohammad Rijal and Debby Susanto ousted China’s Xu Chen and Ma Jin, in the quarterfinals. Even Tontowi and Liliyana struggled against the Chinese pair.

“Teamwork and fighting spirit is the key. The players’ commitment to bring out the best makes it perfect. We need them to face a team event like Sudirman Cup and we are ready to maintain it,” Richard said.

The Sudirman Cup is a biennial event held in every odd year. In the event, each tie comprises one men’s and one women’s singles game, one men’s and one women’s doubles and one mixed doubles game.

The inaugural event was played in Indonesia in 1989 and since then only three nations have won the trophy: Indonesia (1), South Korea (3) and China (6).

The event is one of four major goals set by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) to achieve this year.

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Chairman of the Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI), Gita Wirjawan, will hold a weekly motivational sessions for athletes ahead of Sudirman Cup tournament to increase the confidence of athletes.

"Every week we hold a ceremony discourse and motivation with me. Addition, I will also bring my friends from all professions and fields to give a sermon to athletes who will go to the Sudirman Cup," Gita said in Jakarta on Monday.

He will also intensify training and increase the discipline of the athletes.

"We've tell that players must be disciplined and not go out of town. Obviously there are some who need to get out of having to participate in the Grand Prix to India and to Australia. But generally they are contained in Cipayung," he explained.

Gita also ensure the Head of Development and Performance PBSI, Rexy Mainaky, this week returned to Indonesia after completing a business in the Philippines, where Rexy train before it pulled into PBSI.

"Rexy will return this week, permanent. He will also be in Cipayung to escort the atheletes," said Gita and laugh.

Sudirman Cup tournament to be one of the main targets in addition to the targeted by PBSI beside All England, World Championships and SEA Games.

Since becoming the first winner in the event the Sudirman Cup 1989, Indonesia has never won the world championship title in the mixed team.

The results of the draw group in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Thursday (28/3) then, also put Indonesia on the group of death, joining defending champions India and China.

"It's a tough challenge," said Gita, who also served as Secretary of Commerce.

But the team believes Gita Indonesia still has a chance, let alone a country that advanced to the quarterfinals will be taken from the champions and runners-up each group.

after reading all the posts here, I still don't know what's the goal for PBSI. " The event is the goal. " what does this mean? I am wondering PBSI has set any target, like winner or runner-up as their goal. Since it's almost impossible to win this Sudirman cup, what's their realistic position they want to achieve?

(Piala Sudirman) Indonesia Targetkan Bawa Pulang Piala Sudirman
    [IMG]

“Sekarang nomor ganda campuran menjadi andalan Indonesia.

Indonesia Targets to win Sudirman Cup

(Jakarta, 10/04/2013) Indonesia Sudirman Cup team is determined to be a champion and took home the prestigious mixed team that come from Indonesia previously. Sudirman Cup is one of the four major targets aimed by PBSI in 2013 in addition to the All England, World Championships and SEA Games.

The above disclosed the Team Manager and Head of Development and Performance Management Center of PBSI Rexy Mainaky at a media gathering on Tuesday (10/4) at the National Training Cipayung.

"The target is we have to win, if not targeting ato be the champion so when we will become a champion? and administrators and coaches believe that athletes should also have the courage, that they could "said Rexy.

However, Rexy realize that bringing home the Sudirman Cup is not easy. Based on the results of the draw, the Indonesian team is a group with India and defending champion and top seed, China. While Indonesia itself was seventh in the list of featured country.

"Although we are not great odds, but we should be able to maximize the players the players there. Three numbers are the mainstay of the mixed doubles, men's doubles and men's singles. But I do not want women's singles and women's doubles become handicap "added Rexy.

Rexy then adds that he also had discussions with Tontowi Ahmad / Natsir Liliyana who won the All England 2012-2013 regarding their readiness in the Sudirman Cup. Indonesian mixed doubles pair best this is one of the mainstays in the take points in Sudirman Cup later.

"Now the mixed doubles is the key Indonesia. I say to Tontowi / Liliyana that victory in the mixed doubles is absolute, should win. "He said.

"Periodically I do a sharing session with the athletes ahead of Sudirman Cup. At that point we had relaxed chat about their readiness, as if she's ready if later against India and China, and so forth "added Rexy.

PBSI has released a list of the shadow team Sudirman Cup 2013, which consisted of 28 players. PBSI will then filter out 20 names of them to get into the first team on the 6th May.

I really doubt Indonesia can win this Sudirman Cup, the probability is close to 0%. Judging on their performance at Axiata Cup, It is pretty horrible after semifinal.
If they can make it to semifinal, it is already a bonus for them.

Entering semi final or final will depend on the opponent. But whoever the opponent is, it will be tough for INA to win in QF if playing like last weekend AxCup.

However, I believe that the target is Sudirman Cup and Axiata is just warm up. They keep changing the players. The players themselves may not be in top condition last weekend, if they really target Sudirman Cup, I hope they will not peak last weekend.

I am not really excited for this year Sudirman Cup because it is still too uneven.

Hopefully next year TC/UC will be more even.

And it is good that INA will send young players only to Sea Games. Too bad there may not be team event because in Sea Games, I like to watch team event rather than individual event.

but IMO.. the team preparation for Axiata cup and Sudirman cup will be totally different, Simon and Sony are not fit yet. I believe INA still can beat any opponents beside China. Just IMO :D

    My Prediction:

    MS: Sony,Tommy
    WS: Lindaweny,Bellaetrix
    MD: Ahsan/Hendra,Angga/Rian
    WD: Greysia,Meiliana,Anneke,Nitya
    XD: Tontowi/Liliyana,Rijal/Debby

I think this is stronger than Indonesia 2011 (without Tontowi,Liliyana,Taufik,Kido,Hendra)
But don't strong enough to beat China :)

No countries can match China. :)

Most likely that will be the lineup. Although I hope they will include the future stars.

MS : No young players are good enough. Vito was injured so no way he will be included. The other youngsters are too weak.

WS : Bring Hanna instead of Bella ? If Firda is fit, she might play too.

MD : Points needed so no other option.

WD : AnNit, Greysia. Need Pia but unlikely to be selected. The young players if any of the senior is injured.

XD : Towi/Butet definitely. I think Pia is again valuable but unlikely. Put a young pair instead of Rijal/Debby.

INA will surely banking on XD and MD. I still rate WD (non CHN opponents) are all have chance to beat each other, so INA need to find a good combination in WD. I believe Greysia will be in. Greysia/Nitya is a good choice as GreyNit hasn't showed any good progress lately.

For MS, i hope Sony will be fit already in Sudirman Cup. For WS, i think they are going to field Linda as main WS. But if we meet THA, INA may just simply field Firda, as she has good record againts Ratchanok.

WS definitely should be Lindaweny and Aprilla. Bellatrix and Firda are too soft, boring, inconsistent and not strong mentally.

WD should be Gebby/Tiara, and Pia/Rizki.

I was looking through Inthanon (IR) records and saw that Firda has good record against IR.

Screen shot 2013-04-28 at AM 10.24.53.png

Both Lindaweny and Aprilla latest record against IR are not good.

Screen shot 2013-04-28 at AM 10.28.16.png

Screen shot 2013-04-28 at AM 10.29.02.png

If Thai were to meet Indo, Probable line-up :-
MS: Sony vs Boonsak - - Sony to win (51%)
    MD: Indo to win (60%)
    WD: 50-50
    XD: Indo to win (52%)

WS: IR to win (55% if against Linda or April), 50%-50% if against Firda.

Btw, what happened to Sony? He seems to be out of action in the latest few tournaments.

Since the new sponsorship system in early 2013

I am curious to see our national team jersey in the upcoming sudirman cup

would PBSI arrange a separated sponsorship auction for the jersey's cup?
or would they leave it to each player's sponsors jersey ?

If I am not wrong, Li Ning already won the INA team sponsor. So this Sudirman Cup will see the whole team wearing Li Ning.
